He turned to glare at me. “It would be your fault.”
“Yeah,” I grinned. “It would.”
He ran a hand through his hair but only messed it up more. “What the fuck just happened?”
“I don’t know, but once we’ve recovered, I want it to happen again.”
“One of us might really die then.”
I laughed. “We’re not that old.”
Carter huffed.
“Come on.” I stood and tried to pull him up with me, but he resisted. “Let’s see if we can find all our clothes and head back.”
“Now you want to be inside?”
“I want to clean you up and then?—”
A buzzing sound came from Carter’s pants.
“Shit. That’s probably Miles wondering where the fuck I am.”
I grabbed the phone from him before he could answer it. “Ignore him.”
“He’ll show up here. They all will. Just like they did before.”
“Jesus, can’t they stay out of your business?”
He sighed. “They care. They’re worried about me, and now they know how I feel about you. Worth might explain and talk him down, but it’s a risk.”
I narrowed my eyes. “What does Worth know that Miles doesn’t?”
“I might’ve gone to talk to him when I left.”
“And what did you tell him?”
Carter froze, and I saw fear in his eyes. I’d pushed him pretty damn hard already. It was probably enough for now. I knew how he felt even if he hadn’t said the words out loud. “Carter?”
“I’d told all of them we’d hooked up, but I hadn’t…. They didn’t know how far things had gone before you….”
“Betrayed you? Left you for dead?”
“You didn’t leave me for dead. You sent me back to camp. You told me how to get there.”
“I also knew there was a big chance you’d never make it. Do you know how many nights I woke up from nightmares of finding your dead body in that jungle, from finding out I’d killed you, the one man I ever cared about?”
“Matteo.” He reached for me, and I let him take my hand.
“I wouldn’t have been able to live with that.”
“You did everything you could to save me.”
I frowned. “You’re defending me now?”
“Apparently. Should I not be?”
Warmth rushed over me. “No, I like it.”
