“You damn well better. You’re going want my defense when we meet with my friends.”

“Wait. You’re making me part of your plans now?”

“Yes. I told them we aren’t leaving you out. You’re an integral part of this, and besides X told us not to.”

I studied him for a minute. “Is X’s declaration really the reason?”

He shook his head. “If you think I’m letting you out of my sight, you’re fucking crazy.”

“’Cause you think I’ll make a run for it?”

“No, because if anybody hurts you, I’m going to tear their head off.”

I leaned in and kissed him softly. “You’re so fucking perfect.”

The phone had stopped buzzing, but it started up a few seconds later. I looked at the screen. “It’s Ford this time.”

Carter grabbed the phone from me, and I didn’t protest. Ford seemed to be the most sensible of Carter’s friends. He was likely the best one to negotiate all this.

I listened to Carter as he talked. “I’m fine…Yes…Did Worth tell you that?…He’s coming with me…No, in the morning is soon enough…He doesn’t have to like it, and I’m sure Ben agrees with me…Don’t worry about me. I’m fine.”

“He’s really fine. I won’t do a thing to hurt him.” I yelled loud enough for Ford to hear me.

“Jesus, he’s right there?” I heard Ford speaking as I nestled against Carter’s neck, nipping him, and making him jump.

“I don’t think he’s going to be anywhere else. Don’t tell me Jay isn’t always as close to you as he can get when you’re alone.”

“Yeah, but Jay is?—”

“You’re not seriously that hypocritical, are you? You once said you hated him.”

Ford huffed. “I never hated him.”

Carter glanced up at me, holding my gaze as he spoke to Ford. “I never really hated Matteo either. That’s been part of the problem all along.”

“Damn, Carter. You really are fucked up.”

“Aren’t we all?”

“Hmmm. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“All right, be careful.”

I grinned at Carter when he ended the call and turned to face me. “I don’t want you to ever be careful when it comes to me.”

“I think I’ve proven that’s fucking impossible for me.”

“You don’t want to rush back to the city tonight and make a plan to deal with our enemies?”

“No.”

“So how do you want to spend the night?”

“I want to go back to the cabin, take a shower, make something to eat, and see if we can just be together for a little while like civilized human beings.”

I raised my brows. “But we’re not civilized.”

“Can we pretend for a little while?”
