“I happen to know a great place to get some breakfast though. Why don’t we see if we can pull ourselves together and go.”

“I don’t think we should?—”

I laid a finger on his lips. “I’m taking you to breakfast. Now, let’s see if the shower actually works.”

Later, after a cold shower together, Carter and I rode our motorcycles to a nearby village. When I stopped in front of a small home, Carter raised his brows and looked at me. “What are we doing here?”

“Getting some breakfast.”

“We’re just going to ask one of the locals to make us breakfast?”

“It’s too early for Andres to have opened his cart yet.” I knocked and seconds later, Andres opened the door and greeted us with a smile.

“We were wondering if you’ve got some arepas de huevos ready,” I said, switching to Spanish.

He smiled. “I do. How many would you like?”

“Six.”

He returned a few moments later with the steaming pastries. I paid him generously and introduced him to Carter.

“Thank you for breakfast,” Carter replied in Spanish as they shook hands.

“I enjoy feeding Matteo. He’s always hungry, so he’s one of my best customers.”

Carter laughed. It was good to see him looking so lighthearted. I doubted it would last, but I’d hold on to the memory.

“Have a good day.” Andres said.

“We will.”

Carter waved to him as he closed the door. “You too.”

We walked back to our bikes, and I handed Carter his share of breakfast.

“How do you know him?”

“I always get to know some of the locals wherever we are.” Right now we were training with the Colombian special forces but also doing some reconnaissance.

“So he’s an….” Carter looked at me pointedly, and I nodded. He didn’t need to say the word informant out loud. I’d heard it clearly.

“You could have told me you’d been scouting out the village.”

“I only pass on information if it’s necessary, it’s the best way to protect everyone.”

Carter studied me closely. “I guess you do have some surprises for me.”

“Other than the size of my dick.”

“Ha. That’s no surprise the way you walk around naked all the damn time.”

“I bet the way it felt inside you was, though. Better than you ever imagined, huh?”

“You’re so fucking arrogant.”

“It’s not arrogance when it’s true.” I gestured toward the food. “Try your breakfast.”

His eyes widened when he bit into the arepa. “Oh my God, that’s so good.”
