“I will be,” she replied. Everything that happened to her hadn’t fully set into her mind. Isotta feared when that moment would arrive.

“Are you okay?” She asked in return.

“Mmhmm,” Massimo replied. “Especially since we won’t have to worry about Alessandro anymore.”

Isotta’s brow wrinkled. “Why? What happened?” She asked.

“He’s dead,” Massimo answered flatly. “I killed him.”

Isotta’s eyes widened in response, and so did Celestina’s. Francesco’s did initially, and then they quickly smoothed. He took a moment to look back at Massimo. When Francesco gained Massimo’s eyes, he gave him a slight nod. That was all the thanks Massimo needed. When Massimo’s eyes returned to Isotta, he still saw the wide eyes and pitch in her brow.

“Did you think I would let him get away with what he did to you?”

She could see instant anger register in his eyes. Like the mere thought of what Alessandro had done to her reawakened the beast inside him. Isotta appreciated his covering of her. Her eyes returned to normal as she extended her hand and gently touched Massimo’s face. He winced and then settled. Once she realized she’d hurt him, Isotta started to pull her hand away, but Massimo placed his on top of hers and leaned into the touch. Isotta shared that moment with him and then eased her hand away. Massimo barely responded to the removal as his thoughts were focused somewhere else.

“Are you ready to go?” Massimo asked.

Isotta wasn’t startled by his question. She thought he’d ask her.

“Let me step out so we can talk,” Isotta replied.

Massimo stood up and then extended his hand to help Isotta out of the car. Isotta exited the vehicle, closed the door, and followed Massimo a few steps away. She found it difficult to look into his eyes as he spoke.

“I think I’m going home, just for a few days. I think you should do the same after you go to the hospital.”

“I don’t need to go to the hospital,” Massimo replied.

“You’re hurt, seriously,” Isotta answered. She was concerned about him.

“I’m good. I just need some rest.”

“And I think you’ll get it at your parents.”

“Maybe you’re right,” Massimo conceded. He was glad she was safe, but Massimo wasn’t sure how supportive he could be with so much on his mind. He knew Alessandro’s family would retaliate as soon as they found out what had happened. He reached out his arms, and Isotta stepped into them.

“I’ll call,” Massimo uttered as they separated.

“Okay.”

He walked Isotta back to the car and opened the door for her. Once he was satisfied that she was comfortably inside, Massimo closed the door behind her.

“How do you want the guards handled?” Giuseppe asked as Massimo approached him and their father.

“How many are there?” Giordano asked.

“Six,” Giuseppe answered.

“Kill them,” Massimo replied flatly.

“Are you sure?” Giuseppe asked, his brow pitched.

“Yes,” Massimo answered just as flatly.

Giuseppe looked to his father for confirmation.

“If we don’t kill them, then they’ll report back to Alessandro’s family what happened,” Giordano observed.

“On second thought, don’t kill them,” Massimo replied, shifting gears. “I want them to know exactly what happened.”
