“Text me later!”

We hang up. Darby is always the person to lift me up and make me laugh, not that I feel down, but my mind is weighing heavily on Gray’s ex and what her response will be to the new settlement details. My gut tells me she’s only trying to hurt him and it won’t go before a judge, but who really knows?

Hopefully him retracting on the discussions with her keeping the Nashville house, won’t prompt them to come back even harder. I can't believe she's going after his land without any legal claim. The nerve of the woman. She’s lucky she’s even getting half of the house proceeds.

I guess some people can stoop to any low when it comes down to it. She’s no exception.

When reception buzzes through to let me know Gray’s here, I walk out to greet him.

He’s dressed impeccably in dark slacks and a black dress shirt and tie. Looking his usual Dark and Dangerous self as he stands waiting for me. He’s different behind closed doors, I guess most people are. When he’s in public, he’s more reserved and doesn’t smile a lot. I wonder if anyone ever really gets to see his more playful side, or does he save that just for when he’s behind closed doors… maybe for between the sheets?

An involuntary wave of jealousy shoots through me again, imagining him with any other women.

Looking at him now with his hair styled and his shoes polished to perfection, he could be on a magazine cover. His tall frame and sexy build command the space where he stands. I feel a thrill run through me every time I’m in his proximity. It makes me want to do all kinds of very bad things, despite our current predicament.

“Mr. Bassett.” I smile as I approach. “Good to see you again.”

The corner of his mouth pulls up at my salutation. “Likewise, Miss Chambers.”

“Come this way.” I turn on my heel, and we walk to my office, where I promptly close the door.

He smiles. “Alone at last.”

My heart races as we both take a seat.

I know we need to get down to business, and it’s not sitting well with me to have to relay everything, but it has to be done.

Finding a solution to his divorce settlement is our number one priority.

“Glad he took it well,” I say, as Hartley’s baby blues stare back at me. She’s just given me a rundown of what happened with her conversation with Keira’s lawyer. “Let’s hope they get the message. If this has to go before a judge, then so be it. I was willing to pay more to get rid of her, but she tried to fuck with my family’s land, and that’s not gonna roll with me.”

I’m angry. In fact, I may never get over her audacity. One minute she’s throwing herself at me, begging me not to leave her. Calling me a hundred times a day and bombarding me with messages. Then she slaps a fucking caveat on my land and starts arguing about oranges over apples. Considering her family values, she should be grateful for the amount she’s already getting.

“There is one thing that Mr. Steeples mentioned, something that caught me off guard,” she says, glancing down at the file laid out in front of her.

I pique an eyebrow. “Tell me.” From the look on her face, I can see it’s not good.

“Gray, he mentioned something about assault charges.”

My heart plummets. It’s not like I didn’t know Keira wouldn’t eventually pull this shit, but she’s got a fucking nerve.

“And now you think I assaulted her?” I sigh.

She shakes her head. “I don’t for one second believe that, no. But she may plead that she was pressured into signing the prenup. I’m surprised that this didn’t come up with my father.”

“It did. It was off the record. I told him everything.”

That makes her shoulders sag ever so slightly.

“So? Is there anything else I need to know about the case?”

I stare at her. “Just the case?”

She stares back at me. Once again, I’m reminded of how beautiful she is. She’s wearing more makeup than I’m used to, but she looks ever the smart, sophisticated woman that she is. I know she’s even more gorgeous without it.
