“What does it matter, Lennon? He’s my boss.”

“So, you keep telling me-”

“Because it’s true.”

Lennon moved around some pillows, getting more comfortable on the couch. “Okay, so let’s say that you jump his bones, and he lets you-”

“Such a charming picture-”

“-then it doesn’t work out,” she said, talking over me. “What’s the worst that can happen?”

My brows jumped. “Uh, I get fired?”

“So?”

“Wh…what? Lennon, I love my job. I-”

“Have enough money and backing to start your own call center if the prick fires you,” she quickly pointed out. “He’s not the only man in the world with deep pockets, Posie.”

I let out a heavy sigh because dealing with Lennon did that to a person. Lennon’s mind worked like a machine. She saw facts of a situation when most people were blinded by the emotions of that same situation. Lennon had an uncanny ability to ignore people’s emotional turmoil and see straight to the facts of everything that a person was telling her. Much to the dismay of the person in emotional turmoil, it was hard to argue with facts.

Like now.

“I’m good at taking calls, Lennon,” I said. “Not running a business.”

“Luckily for you, you come from a family that knows exactly how to run many businesses,” she countered, and it always warmed my heart whenever she spoke like I belonged to them, too.

“I know that you want it to be that easy, but it’s not.”

“And I know that you wish that it wasn’t that easy, but it is,” she retorted. “And the more that you push back against this, the more that I’m convinced that you’ve finally met someone that you see as more than just an experiment, and you’re terrified.”

“Of course, I’m terrified,” I admitted. “Even though I’ve managed to get my sex life back, my triggers still exist, Lennon. I’m liable to freak out in bed at any given moment, and how humiliating would that be?”

“If he’s the right man for you, then he’ll never make you feel humiliated whenever you look at him,” she insisted. “Humiliation is for strangers, Posie, not family. No matter how hard life is kicking you in the teeth, if he’s the one for you, then all you’ll feel is safe whenever you look at him.”

“That’s easy for you to say-”

“Don’t,” she said sternly, stopping me from crossing the line.

When those assholes had attacked me, Lennon hadn’t left my side the entire time. Other than to hunt them down and make every single one of them pay, Lennon had stood by my side until I’d been able to function on my own, and not just physically. I had moved in with her as soon as rehab had released me, and I had lived with her until I’d felt strong enough to finally be on my own.

I could still remember the day that I had moved out, and it hadn’t been just Lennon who’d been emotional about me leaving. Camden had also expressed his concerns, and the man had even offered to let me live with them forever. It had been his offer that had sent me to an entirely different part of the state. It was too easy to use crutches when they were so readily available to you.

At any rate, it was unfair to accuse Lennon of not understanding what I’d been through. Sure, she’d never been raped, but she’d been there for every tear, every pain, every torturous memory, every step in rehab…she’d been there for it all. Hell, she still was.

There was also the fact that she had sold her soul to Satan to avenge me, and I will always regret asking her to give me the details of what she’d done to Kenneth Thomas. Lennon had torn him apart with her own two hands, and those nightmares sometimes got mixed up with the nightmares from my rape.

As for Lennon?

Lennon had, and still did, sleep like a baby.

“I’m sorry,” I mumbled. “I…I’m sorry, Lennon. You know that I didn’t mean-”

“Forget it,” she said easily. “I didn’t come here to fight with you, hurt your feelings, or let you hurt mine. I came here because I will never standby and watch you be scared of anything, Posie. Between your parents and those assholes, you’ve endured too much to let some guy scare you. Even if he is hot as hell.”

I choked out a laugh. “How do you know what he looks like?”

“I did an internet search of him after our phone call,” she admitted. “I mean, c’mon, Pose.”
