Sunday had been spent doing nothing but chores and running errands. Normally, I ran around during the week or on Saturdays, but with Lennon’s visit, I’d had to put everything on hold until Sunday. I wasn’t complaining though. It’d been good to see Lennon, and it’d felt good to finally make a decision where Killian was concerned.

So, with the decision made to throw Killian some hints of willingness, I wasn’t too happy with the conversation happening around me.

“Oh, I bet he’s great in the sack,” Brenda said, and I felt like a hypocrite for not liking her comments but thinking the same damn thing myself.

“He definitely has that whole tall, dark, and handsome thing working for him,” Janie agreed.

“Oh, God,” Laurie choked out. “Can you imagine if he’s gay? What a waste if he is.”

“Not for the men of this city,” Janie huffed. “Lucky bastards.”

“Do you ever wonder why he does what he does?” Laurie asked.

“What do you mean? Like...why he has call centers?”

Laurie looked over at Brenda. “Well, kind of, I guess.”

“Kind of?” Janie asked.

“Well, like…what if he’s really a predator and uses the call centers to find his victims,” Laurie posed, and I couldn’t believe how outraged I felt over the direction that this conversation was heading.

“Do you really think so?” Janie balked.

“I mean, it’s poss-”

“That’s it,” I snapped, reaching the end of my rope with their inappropriate gossip. “You guys need to stop and talk about something else.”

While Janie and Brenda looked properly chastised, Laurie looked offended. “Excuse me?” she huffed.

Ignoring how much of a hypocrite I was being, I said, “Not only is it inappropriate for you to discuss our boss’ sex life, but insinuating that he finances his charity work to prey on unsuspecting women is…is…I don’t even know what it is, but how fucking dare you, Laurie. What has the man ever done that would lead you to believe that he would ever do such a thing?”

“Well, my, my, my,” she taunted. “You sure are getting defensive over a little gossip, Posie.”

“That’s not little gossip, Laurie,” I spat. “That’s dangerous gossip that could ruin a man’s reputation and his life. Not to mention that it’s none of our business what he does in his private life. Good, bad, it’s none of our business.”

“Then why are you defending him?” she challenged. “Or are you simply jealous because he interacts with us more than he does with you?”

My eyes almost bugged out of my head. “Are you delusional? He hardly interacts with any of us. If he is speaking with any of his employees, it’s mostly the psychologists.”

“He talks to me all the time,” Laurie lied, and I had no idea where this was going.

“You’re lying,” I said, calling her out. “And even if you aren’t, that has no bearing on the fact that you guys were discussing his private business, then throwing around the possibility that he might be a sexual predator. Grow the fuck up, Laurie.”

“Okay, maybe we all need to calm down-”

“Why?” I snapped at Brenda. “Because you were overheard talking about how great he must be in bed? Participating in malicious gossip is just as bad as starting it in the first place.”

“I didn’t say anything malicious,” she cried out, defending herself.

“Maybe not, but I didn’t see you shutting down Laurie’s absurd theories, either.”

“Posie, we didn’t mean any harm-”

“No one ever means to do anything,” I bit out. “That’s always the excuse, and that excuse sucks.”

“Because you’ve never thought about how gorgeous he is?” Laurie fired back. “You’re lying if you say no.”

“Even if I did find him attractive or wonder what he was like in bed, I wouldn’t be discussing it in the goddamn breakroom at work,” I shot back. “I have enough respect for the fact that he’s my boss to keep my personal opinions of him to myself.”
