“Oh, so-”

“Plus, I was willing to ignore the inappropriateness of it all until you dared to suggest that he might be a serial predator,” I went on. “I mean, what in the hell is wrong with you? How can you take all the good that we do here and try to turn it into something dark?”

“It was just a quest-”

I stood up, the scraping of my chair cutting her off. “No, it wasn’t just a question,” I hissed as I gathered my stuff to throw in the trash, my appetite gone. “It was a suggestive question that could lead to serious repercussions if Brenda or Janie had wanted to spread your nasty theory.”

“You’re taking this way too-”

“And for what?” I kept snapping. “Because you’re jealous? Because you have a crush? Because you want to sleep with him? What? Why? What was the endgame to talking about Mr. Warrick’s sex life? Were you hoping for a little encouragement from Janie and Brenda to go for it?” I knew that I was beginning to sound jealous, but I couldn’t help it.

It was also possible that I was.

This time, Laurie stood up to face me. “Oh, trust me, if I wanted Mr. Warrick, I’d have him.”

As much as I wanted to argue with her, it was hard to. While I had no idea what type of woman Killian went for, Laurie Vernon was very pretty and very well put together. She was a couple of inches taller than me, had beautiful red hair, bright green eyes, and a killer figure. I wasn’t sure if it was all natural or not, but it worked for her. She was definitely a ten where I was a decent six.

“For longer than what it would take for him to be satisfied before moving onto the next woman?” I sneered like a true jealous harpy.

“Okay, I think that’s enough,” Brenda said. “You guys are getting loud, and we don’t need anyone coming in here.”

Taking a deep breath, I walked over to the trash can to throw away my stuff. When I turned around, Laurie was still glaring at me, her arms crossed over her chest, daring me to say anything more. Still, as much as I wanted to, Brenda was right; this wasn’t the time or place.

So, walking over to the group, I said, “The next time that you want to talk about what happens in Mr. Warrick’s bedroom, make sure that I’m not around.”

“Posie-”

Talking over Brenda, I added, “And the next time that I hear anyone making unflattering suggestions about what goes on with Mr. Warrick’s foundation, I will skip H.R. and go straight to the man himself with what I know.”

“It’ll be your word against mine,” Laurie pointed out, letting me know exactly which version of events Brenda and Janie would support.

Glad that I’d left timid Posie back in therapy, I slammed my hands down on the table, leaned in, and glared at the hateful woman. “Except for one thing, Laurie,” I said.

“Oh, yeah? What’s that?”

“That you don’t have the sense that God gave a shoe, or else you would have remembered that this entire building has security cameras.” Her face immediately paled. “Including the breakrooms.”

“Oh, God,” Janie whispered brokenly.

Straightening to my full height, I was practically snarling at the three women when I said, “This might be the right time to find out if that camera surveillance comes with sound, don’t you think?”

I stormed out of the breakroom, leaving them to choke on their bullshit.

Chapter 14

Killian~

While I’d been able to move fast enough to hide from the scene, I hadn’t been fast enough to move out of the way of a pissed off Posie Tinley. I had barely made it around the hallway corner when she came barreling towards me, my hard body stopping her as she ran smack dab into me.

“Goddamn it,” she hissed as I grabbed her shoulders to steady her.

“Are you okay?”

The petite woman glared up at me. “Yes,” she snapped, and it was on the tip of my tongue to call her out on her lying, but she looked genuinely pissed off, and not at me this time.

“Are you sure?”

Posie opened her mouth to argue with me, but then I watched her take a deep breath, doing her best to collect herself. As I watched, I noticed how her breathing was exact and purposeful, and I recognized that same technique in the way that Ellie used to use.
