“Kill-”

“But that same guy is not going to be able to look beyond what he knows about you to see that you’re more than your broken pieces,” I continued. “He’s not going to be able to see or understand the woman who is best friends with Lennon fucking Marlow-Prince. He’s not going to be able to see or understand the woman that has no problems with vigilante justice. He’s not going to be able to see or understand that you’re only trusting him with your body, not your loyalty.”

Posie ran her hands through her hair again. “God, this is such a fucking mess.”

“I don’t disagree.”

She gave me a solemn nod. “Well, I guess there’s only one thing left to do.”

“What’s that?” I asked as I slid my hands back in my pockets to keep from reaching for her.

“I quit.”

My stomach clenched. “What?”

“I quit,” she repeated.

“Why?” I asked, my jaw clenched with regret, but mostly anger. “Do you honestly think that I’m going to retaliate?”

“No, I don’t,” she answered, and I supposed that was something. “I’m quitting because…because it’s one thing for one person in a relationship to be fucked-up, it’s quite another thing when both people in a relationship are fucked-up.”

“So, what?” I asked, madder than I’d been in a long fucking time. “That’s it? You quit, I let you walk away, and we never see each other again?”

“I quit, then find that nice guy that you were telling me about, and you…well, you go on saving those that need to be saved,” she said right before turning, then walking out of my office.

I wanted to reach out and keep her from leaving, but I couldn’t do that. Posie already knew what it felt like to not be able to escape when she needed to.

Chapter 29

Posie~

It was said that people shouldn’t make permanent decisions based on temporary emotions, but that’s not what I’d done. I hadn’t quit Birdwing because Killian knew all my dirty secrets, and I hadn’t quit Birdwing because I’d found out his.

No.

Fear and insecurity had been the culprits.

Fear from wishing that he’d do all those things that he’d said he wanted to do to me, and insecurity from knowing that it was likely never to happen. No matter what Killian had claimed, how long was a man expected to hold back his desires? While it had thrilled me to hear him speak about me like a desirable woman, he had also been highlighting all of my baggage, though he hadn’t meant to.

After I’d left Killian’s office yesterday, I’d gone straight to H.R. and had quit on the spot, not even offering up a two weeks’ notice. From there, I’d gone to my workstation, grabbed my purse and anything else that I’d felt was sentimental or important, then had left without a word to anyone.

Once I’d gotten home, I had booked a flight to Port Lucia, packed my bags, then had flown out on the first available flight home.

Home.

While I had any number of places that I could stay in Port Lucia or Sands Cove, I didn’t have a home in either town. After graduating from high school, I’d never gone back home, not even to visit my parents for holidays or anything like that. I only ever came back for Lennon’s family.

So, rather than intrude on Lennon again, I had rented a hotel suite for the week until I could figure out my next move. Fortunately for me, I had money, so there wasn’t a need to rush my next decision. I had time to think a bit. Unfortunately for me, my next decision was going to be without Killian Warrick.

Shaking those thoughts from my head, I knocked on the door, even though I knew that I could just walk in. A few seconds later, Ramsey Reed Sr. was opening the door to his office, a welcoming smile on his face, and it was amazing how much I trusted this man.

“Posie,” he greeted, wrapping his hand around the back of my neck, then kissing the top of my head. Apart from his wife, Uncle Ramsey wasn’t an especially affectionate person, so I could only guess that Lennon had already spilled the beans about me and Killian. “It’s good to see you.”

“It’s good to see you, too,” I returned as he escorted me further into his office. “Thanks for meeting with me.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” he replied easily. “You know that I always have time for my kids.” My heart thumped hard at that. “So, what brings you by, Posie?”

I sat down in one of the armchairs that were placed in front of Uncle Ramsey’s desk as he walked around to sit back in his desk chair. His office was expensive, but not ostentatious. It wasn’t surprising though because his home was decorated the same way. Of course, that could all be Aunt Emerson since she hadn’t been born with a silver spoon in her mouth.
