Killian’s chin went up. “They’re not a part of this.”

“First rule of being a part of this family, we don’t tolerate lying,” she said. “Also, don’t fucking insult my intelligence again.”

“Lennon-”

“What?” She looked over at me. “Don’t call him out on his bullshit?”

“No,” I said carefully, glancing over at Crew really quickly, so that she would get the message. “Just…tone it down a bit, yeah?”

Killian shot those blue eyes of his my way. “I’m not leaving without you,” he repeated, and I knew that I needed to settle this before shit hit the fan.

“Posie?” I looked over at Uncle Deke. “I think that you need to go back into the backyard with everyone else while Killian and I have a talk,” he said. “After that, you can speak with him if you want.”

“Uhm…just talk?”

He nodded. “Just talk,” he repeated. “I promise.”

That still didn’t sound comforting at all.

Chapter 34

Killian~

Everyone had followed Deke Marlow’s lead; however, the man had failed to mention that our little ‘talk’ wouldn’t begin until Liam McCellan, Ace McIntire, and Ramsey Reed Sr. fucking arrived to join in on our little conversation. Liam and Ramsey lived in Sands Cove, so I’d been left in Deke Marlow’s office for over a fucking hour before they had all arrived. Talk about a torture tactic. Like a police interrogation, I hadn’t been offered a drink, a snack, a nap, nothing. Deke had sat me down and had let me sweat it out until his partners in crime had arrived.

Plus, not only had he brought in the big guns to kill me or warn me off Posie, but the fucker had also allowed Lennon in on whatever the fuck this was. The dynamics had reminded me so much of how Saveria was treated in her family. It was uncanny and worrisome. The more that I interacted with Lennon Prince, the more wary I became of her.

“What all do you know about Posie?” Deke Marlow asked, finally getting this shitshow underway.

“Not much,” I admitted. “I did a background check when she came to work for me, so I know her parents’ names, her educational history, some of her financial background, things like that.”

“Keep talking to us like we’re stupid and if you think that you’re bleeding now…” Lennon trailed off, her warning clear.

My jeans had done a fair job of protecting me against the barbed wire, but my arms and chest were a mess. Whoever designed this house had done a fantastic job of camouflaging that damned barbed wire into the spires of the fence and gate. By the time that I had realized why I was bleeding, it’d been too late.

Since they already knew everything about me, it did seem rather pointless to beat around the bush. “The first background check on Posie had been standard,” I clarified. “It was the second one that…well, that told me a little bit more.”

“And why did you conduct a second one on her?” Deke Marlow asked.

“Because of what I do,” I answered honestly. “I…I knew that I wanted to pursue something with Posie, but I wanted to do it the smart way.”

“Look, we’re not here to warn you off Posie,” Liam McCellan said.

“You’re not?”

He shook his head. “No. We’re here to warn you of what will happen if you ever hurt that girl,” he replied evenly and seriously.

“We’re also here to warn you of what will happen if she wants you to leave her alone and you don’t,” Ace McIntire added.

I looked straight into his amber-colored eyes and said the most reckless thing that I’d ever said in my life. “I’m not leaving here without her. I don’t give a fuck what happens or what threats are issued. I…” I shook my head. “Nah, I’m not leaving without her.”

“Why?” Lennon asked, her direct nature shining through.

“Because I love her,” I answered truthfully.

Lennon arched a brow. “Are you sure that’s not just your hero complex talking?”

“I don’t have a hero complex,” I denied.
