“Thanks.”
“Is everything okay?” He asks, and I nod.
“It was my best friend. The call dropped though.”
He nods, and I pull up her number, enter it into the satellite phone, and hit send.
“Hello?” Tessa answers.
“Hey, sorry about that.”
“Who’s Niko?” She demands, and I look at the man in question.
“Um, hold on.”
I cover the phone and whisper to Niko.
“Can I tell her about you?”
“I wish you would.”
“I mean, can I tell her that shifters and fated mates are real?”
“Can she keep a secret?” He asks, and I nod.
“Yeah, we can trust her.”
“Then go ahead.”
I smile, and he closes the door, giving me some privacy.
“Shifters and fated mates are real, and Niko is my fated mate,” I say in a rush.
“What?” She asks after the longest pause.
“Shifters are real. Fated mates are real. So much of what we write is real,” I say more slowly.
“Okay, so what’s in the air up there in Alaska?” She asks me, and I laugh.
“You can’t tell anyone about this,” I warn her, and she snorts.
“Who would I tell? You’re the only one that I talk to.”
She has a point there. We’re both introverted book lovers who really only talk to each other.
“What kind is Niko?” She asks, and I settle into his chair.
“Wolf, but I’ve met a few bears too.”
“That’s so cool! I want to meet a bear shifter!”
“Come up here.”
“I wish, but by the time I got everything squared away here, you would be coming home. Wait… you are coming back here, right?”
“Of course!” I say, though I don’t feel so sure right now.
I’m attracted to Niko, drawn to him, but I can’t really be with him.
