“I do, it’s just…”

She trails off, and I grab her a glass of water, carrying it over to the table.

“We’ll find the man that’s after you soon. You don’t need to worry about him. I’ll always keep you and our kids safe,” I promise her.

“This is all happening fast. I… I can’t move here. My life is in New York.”

My wolf and I both tense.

“I thought that you knew about shifters and fated mates?” I ask, and she nods.

“I do, but I guess it was still just a fantasy in my head. I have to be realistic here. I can’t move here. I have my things back in New York. Tessa is there. This was just meant to be a vacation.”

“Things have changed,” I state firmly, and she swallows hard.

I want to argue with her. I want to demand that she stay, but I know that would probably only push her away.

We need to make her love us,I think, and my wolf nods in agreement.

“Don’t worry about all of that right now. We have time, right?”

“Yeah, I’m here for a week.”

“Then you’ll be mine for a week,” I say as I turn back to get dinner ready.

A week first.

Then forever.

I’m notthat surprised when I wake up the next morning with Niko’s arms wrapped tightly around me. He’s pressed against my back and I try to ignore how good it feels to have his thick, strong body against me. I feel safe and cared for for the first time in months.

My phone buzzes on the nightstand, and I know that it’s my best friend and co-author, Tessa. I’ve sent her a few messages since I got here, just telling her that I made it safely. I can’t wait to tell her that shifters are real and that I’ve apparently found my own wolf one.

I still can’t believe that shifters are real. When he had told me that I was his fated mate yesterday, my stomach had dropped. It was a shock to learn that the paranormal and fantasy books that I love to write so much aren’t just fantasy.

Niko shifts, squeezing me tighter against him, and I bite my bottom lip. I can hardly believe that I’m in this situation and I have no idea what to do now. I mean, sure, I’m attracted to him, who wouldn’t be, but I barely know him.

I know that he’s said that we’re fated mates, and I guess whenever I fantasized about finding my own shifter, I always thought that it would be love at first sight for me, but that’s not the case. I need to know Niko. I need to build up a relationship, a connection, with him. I don’t think that I can do that in just a few days.

I sigh, trying to slip out of his hold, but his hands grip me tighter.

“It’s too early. Go back to bed, mate,” he tells me sleepily.

His voice is right in my ear, and I shiver as his breath fans over my skin.

“I need to get up,” I whisper.

He sighs, burying his face in my neck and breathing deeply. I stifle a giggle at the sensation, and I feel him smile against me.

“Fine,” he relents, loosening his hold on me.

I scoot over to the edge of the bed and then stand gingerly. My feet and legs look even worse today, the bruises a deep purple. I hiss, shuffling forward a step and then another.

“I’ll carry you,” Niko says, already moving to stand.
