I searched his bathroom and the living room, but he wasn’t there. Instead, I find him in the kitchen. He’s got the carton of eggs out, and I wonder if he was trying to make me breakfast. He’s not cooking, though, when I find him. Instead, he’s staring out the window, glaring at the trees.

I freeze, waiting for him to acknowledge me, but all of his attention is on the forest outside.

“Gunner?” I ask him finally.

“Shh,” he whispers, his eyes locked out the window.

“What is it?” I ask him, moving closer to try to see.

“There’s something moving around out there,” he says, and I tense.

“They found me?” I ask him quietly.

“I don’t know. I’m going to go out there. Go lock yourself in the bedroom,” he orders me.

I start to back up, and I see him pull out his phone and make a call. I assume he’s calling his friends to come help him check it out, but I don’t stick around to ask him.

I hurry back upstairs and hesitate outside of my room before I head into his instead. I want to feel safe right now, and I know that being surrounded by his scent will do that.

My phone rings, and I glance at the screen, only answering when I see Cameron’s name there.

“Hello?”

“Your dad landed in town late last night,” she tells me, and my stomach drops.

“Crap.”

“I know. Davis was showing me some pictures of people who rented cars recently, and I saw him. I’m guessing that he met up with his friends.”

“I think that they’re here,” I admit.

“What?”

“Gunner saw movement.”

“Hold on,” she says, and I hear her talking to Davis.

“Yeah, Davis just got the call. He’s headed out your way.”

“What if…” I start, but I can’t get the words out.

I don’t even want to think about something bad happening to Gunner or any of his friends.

“It will be okay. Your dad and those guys won’t stand a chance,” she promises me.

I hear the back door close, and I crawl over to the window and peek out. Shadows dance in the trees, and I blink, wondering if they’re really there, if I’m seeing things, or if it’s just the wind.

“How was last night?” Cameron asks, trying to distract me.

“It was really good,” I say with a smile.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah, I mean, it was a shock to see his bear and learn about shifters and all of that, but then when we were together, it was just… perfect,” I say dreamily.

“Aww,” Cameron coos.

My smile fades when I think about waking up this morning. Did Gunner think last night was good? Does he regret being with me? He didn’t even smile at me this morning when I greeted him.
