Doubt starts to fill me, and I try to force it back.

There’s just a lot going on,I tell myself. He’s just trying to keep me safe. After all of this, it will be better.

I see more movement in the trees, and I duck down. I can’t watch. I’m freaking myself out trying to decipher shadows.

Cameron is telling me about her night with Davis and how she found out that he was a shifter, but I’m only half listening. The other part of me is trying to hear any sound coming from downstairs.

It’s silent, and I take a deep breath, forcing myself to let it out slowly. I repeat that until it feels like my heart isn’t in danger of bursting out of my chest.

I’m almost relaxed when the backdoor slams open, and I let out a scream.

“Frankie!” Gunner yells, and I sag back against the wall.

If he’s calling for me, he must be okay. They must have won.

I scramble to my feet and unlock the door as he pushes it open. My knees threaten to give out as relief slams into me.

He’s okay. He’s in one piece.

Davis and Ash are right behind him, and I smile when I see they’re all in one piece, too.

“It’s done,” Davis tells me, and I hear Cameron let out a deep breath on the other end of the phone.

Davis smiles at the phone, then takes it from my hands.

“I need to take care of a few things here, mate. I’ll be home soon,” he promises her before he hands the phone back to me.

“I’ll call you back,” I tell her.

“Thank you,” I tell the men, and they all smile.

“You’re safe now,” Davis tells me, and I nod.

It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, and I sag back against the wall.

“Are you okay?” Gunner asks me, and I nod.

“Yeah, I’m just so relieved that it’s over and you’re all okay. Thank you,” I tell him sincerely.

“I told you that I’d keep you safe,” he says, and something about his words rubs me wrong.

It’s like he only helped because he promised Davis that he would. Was I a burden to him this whole time? I know that he’s honorable, that he keeps his word, and that he agreed to look after me before he even met me.

What if that’s all this was? What happens now? Should I leave and stay with Cameron? I mean, things happened so fast between us. Maybe it’s better if we take a step back and figure out what we want to do from here.

I remember Gunner’s less than lukewarm reception this morning and realization dawns on me.

He regrets last night. He was just giving into his feelings, but he doesn’t really want me.

“I need to go deal with that mess,” Gunner tells me, and I nod, trying not to show how hurt I am right now.

The guys leave, and I wait until I hear the door close before I go into the guest room and start to pack. I call Cameron andask her to pick me up. She must be able to hear something in my voice because she doesn’t ask any questions and just tells me that she’ll be here in ten.

I carry the small duffle bag stuffed with my clothes downstairs and take one last look around. This place was really starting to feel like home, and it hurts like hell to leave it now.

I swipe at the tears and head outside when I see Cameron’s car pull up. I rush to the passenger seat and slam the door closed behind me.

“Please drive,” I whisper hoarsely to Cameron, and she does as I ask.
