Frankie

“Are you crazy?”Gunner asks, and I hesitate.

I was so sure that he didn’t want me. I never thought that he would come after me. Now he’s here and practically declaring his love for me. It’s really throwing me off.

“What?” I ask dumbly, and he steps closer to me.

“Of course, I want you, Frankie. You’re my mate. How could you think you’re not the most important thing in the world to my bear and me? I thought we talked about this last night before we slept together.”

“You told me about fated mates and wanting to be with me,” I agree. “But then this morning, you were so cold and distant. You weren’t even there when I woke up.”

“I was trying to make you breakfast. You’re always doing stuff for me, and I wanted to show that I can take care of you too.”

“Oh,” I mumble, and he sighs.

“I should have talked to you. I should have told you how much I love you before I left to deal with those men. I just went into fighter mode and wanted to deal with the threat.”

“I know, and I’m glad that you were there. I hate to think what would have happened if they had caught me when I was alone. I’d probably be on a plane back to Los Angeles by now.”

“I never would have let that happen.”

“You won’t always be there,” I point out, and he growls.

“Trust me, mate. If, by some miracle, they had taken you away from me, I would have been right behind you. I will always come for you. I promise.”

I swipe at the half-dried tears and start to feel pretty dumb for doubting him.

“I’m sorry. I should have talked to you instead of just leaving.”

“You nearly gave me a heart attack,” he tells me. “For a minute, I thought that maybe you were just using me for a safe place to stay and protection.”

“Of course not!” I instantly protest, but then I wince.

I’m sure that it did look that way to him. I mean, I ditched him as soon as the trouble was gone. What else was he supposed to think?

“We really suck at communicating,” I tell him with a laugh.

“I know I’ve never been good at it,” he says with a wry smile. “But I promise to get better at it for you.”

“Me too. I’m sorry, Gunner. I should have just talked to you about how I was feeling.”

“It’s okay. You’re coming home now, right?”

I nod, smiling up at him, and he seems to relax.

“Good.”

He reaches out and pulls me against him. I smile as his warm body wraps around mine.

“I love you, Gunner,” I tell him softly, and he squeezes me tighter.

“I love you too, mate. Always.”

We stand like that, wrapped around each other for a few moments. It feels so good to be with him like this after I thought I would never be close to him again.

“Let’s get your bags, Frankie.”

I nod, stepping back from him. He follows me inside and waves at Cameron. We were eating ice cream and chips in the living room. She was trying to distract me from my broken heart. It wasn’t working, but I love her for trying.
