Elle, Cameron, and Tessa came over two hours ago. They’re keeping Frankie company and trying to distract her from the fact that her father now has her new phone number and that the man who bought her is in town now.

Davis and Niko are in town, trying to find the men, but they’re not staying at any of the usual places. They must have rented a cabin nearby.

I wish I was the one in town looking for these guys, but I know that I need to be here to make sure that Frankie is safe.

My bear paces inside of me. He’s torn on what to do. He wants to keep Frankie safe but he also wants to find these guys and tear them apart.

“I’m going to step outside and get some fresh air,” I tell the girls.

Frankie smiles at me, and my heart thumps hard in my chest.

Bite her,my bear snarls at me, and I roll my eyes at him.

Now is definitely not the time.

I step outside and take a deep breath. All I smell is cold, snow, and a few rabbits nearby. I take a few steps into the trees bordering my cabin and strip off my clothes. I shift, and my bear takes off.

We do a few laps around the cabin, looking for any signs of people nearby. There are no tracks in the snow and I don’t smell anyone I don’t know in the area.

I head back to my clothes and shift. I’m pulling on my boots when I hear the snow crunching behind me. My bear snarls, and I spin around, ready to attack.

I sigh when I see that it’s just Ash headed my way.

“Out on a patrol?” He asks me, and I nod, tying up my boots.

“Yeah, I didn’t see anything.”

“Me either. I’ve been going up and down all of the trails near here. Things are still kind of icy, though, so not a lot of people are hiking. Everyone was over on the ski slopes.”

“Thanks for helping out,” I tell him, and he rolls his eyes.

“Of course, Gunner. You know that we’ve got your back.”

He looks toward my cabin, and I follow his gaze to see Tessa and Frankie walking past the windows in the living room. They each have a bowl in their hands, and I know they must have gotten snacks.

Ash is staring at the girls almost longingly, and my bear bares his teeth at him. I glare, and he startles when he turns back to me.

“She’s mine,” I snarl at him, and he frowns for a second.

“Tessa?” He asks, and now it’s my turn to frown.

“What? No. Frankie. Frankie is my fated mate.”

“Oh, I wasn’t looking at her.”

“Who then?”

“Tessa. She’s my fated mate.”

“Oh. Shit man, go claim her,” I tell him.

“I can’t,” he admits.

“Why not?”

“Why haven’t you claimed Frankie?” He asks, changing the subject to me.

“Because she’s dealing with all of this. I don’t want to overwhelm her.”
