“I hate how down you are on yourself, Lili,” Heidi says.

Josie jumps to her feet. “That does it,” she says, opening my closet. “Fuck this Sweet Valley High bullshit. We’re going out.”

The club is too crowded for my comfort, but Morgana utters a few words in a doorman’s ear, and within ten minutes, we have a VIP room of our own, with a dedicated server and bar snacks on demand. Morgana hangs back to set up the credit account while we settle in.

“This is the life,” Heidi says, helping herself to a chicken satay skewer. Your men might be criminals, but there are some serious perks to fucking a villain.”

She checks her phone, and I smile. “Who are you hoping to hear from? That guy you went out with the other night?”

“I hoped you wouldn’t ask about him,” Heidi says, wincing. “You know I said he worked in fashion? I did some reconnaissance; he has a job in a laundromat and lives with his mom.”

We’re still laughing when Josie sits beside me. “This dress of yours barely covers my ass,” she says, wriggling the hemline down her thighs. “Sasha will kill me when he finds out I went out half-naked. Which reminds me; where’s your phone? Let’s take a shot of you looking hot on your last night of freedom!”

“I left it behind,” I reply. “Arman can track my location, and I don’t feel like explaining myself to him.”

Josie shrugs and holds up her phone. I strike a pose, sticking my tongue out at the camera, but to my dismay, Josie dodges out of reach and taps at the screen.

“Don’t!” I cry, but it’s too late.

“Just gonna make sure Arman knows what he’s missing,” she says. “There. Sent.”

“He’s gonna be furious.” I drop my head into my hands. “Seriously, Josie. Why make him mad on purpose?”

“Because sometimes you gotta kick the hornet’s nest, babe,” she says, pouring champagne.

Morgana comes into the room. “What’s up?” she asks me. “You’re as pale as a corpse.”

“Just a moment of femme fatale energy,” Josie says. “We’re fucking with Arman.” Her phone chimes, and she hands it to me.

Have a great night, tsvetok.

Wait. What?

“He said I should have a good time,” I say, crestfallen.

Josie tuts. “Come on, Lili. I’m not doing it for you. Go for it.”

I tap briskly on the keyboard.

I will now. Met a cute guy.

You what?

Tell me this is an unfunny joke.

I will rip off his arm and shove it up his ass.

“Oh, damn,” I say. “I think I broke him after all.”

Josie’s phone continues to trill.

LILYANA

Are you fucking with me?

Admit it, or I’ll find you.

“He’s bluffing.” Josie shakes her head. “He doesn’t know where we are.”
