She laughed. “Love is truly blind. Whatever makes you happy, Eve, you don’t have to explain it to me. If that’s Beckett’s very big dick, then cool.”

“I never told you it was big.”

“You didn’t have to. No one has that kind of big dick energy without being hung. It’s impossible.”

“Okay, this conversation is getting out of hand.” I grabbed Isabelle’s shoulders and shook her playfully. “You’re out of control! Get it together.”

“Right? I have to. Have fun ‘studying.’ See you tomorrow.” She gave me a bright smile that told me she fully expected us to bang in the stacks and not to get any work done at all.

“See you,” I called over my shoulder and headed inside.

On the third floor, I set my bag and jacket down, claiming a good seat near the coffee machine and printer, and unwound my scarf.

“Miss Martino,” a voice spoke from behind me.

I let out a muted shriek. I spun around, and my cheeks immediately warmed. Professor Jefferies was standing at the printer.

“Oh, hi, Professor,” I managed to get out. Just looking at him took me back to the other night and the scene in Colette’s dressing room, and the photos of it on my phone. I still hadn’ttold Beckett. The timing hadn’t been right yet, but as soon as it was, I’d do it.

“This must be fate, because I was just lamenting that there isn’t an able-bodied young student around to help me out for a second.”

I stared at Jefferies, waiting for him to elaborate on that statement.

“I need help carrying some books to the printer, if you wouldn’t mind obliging.”

“Oh, right. Sure.” I didn’t really have a choice. I trudged after Jefferies up the stacks to pick up the books.

“How is your project going? I know Mr. Anderson can’t be easy to work with.”

Jefferies’ question reminded me of how he had offered to let me swap partners right at the start of the term.

“It’s fine. We work well together,” I answered noncommittally.

Jefferies raised an eyebrow. “Is that right? I didn’t think Beckett worked well with anyone.”

“Did you hear that from Colette Anderson? You need to question your source, Professor,” I muttered, before I could stop and think for a second.

Jefferies cut me a look.Crap.I’d really just said that out loud.

“And Colette Anderson is…?” Jefferies said, acting confused.

“Beckett’s stepmom. I thought you might have met her since she and her husband are big donors to the university,” I said andgave him an innocent smile, praying he couldn’t see the panic on my face from the slip-up.

He nodded after a moment. “Of course. Unfortunately, no, I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting the Andersons.”

“But the last time we spoke about having Beckett as a partner, you said you knew Colette.” The words left me thoughtlessly. I cringed after. Great Eve, point out he’s a liar to his face.

Jefferies stared a long moment. “You must be confused. I don’t know the Andersons.”

“Oh, okay. My mistake.”Then why did you offer to let me change partners before?Jefferies’ lies were as transparent as wet tissue but pointing them out wasn’t going to do me any favors.

“You look nice,” Professor Jefferies said out of the blue.

I glanced at my outfit, suddenly self-conscious. “I just came from ice dancing practice. I didn’t have time to change.”

He scanned over my outfit. I wasn’t showing any skin apart from my hands and face. It shouldn’t be suggestive. But something in his expression made me think it was inappropriate to wear to the library.

Why, though? Because it’s tight? It’s a sports uniform.
