He shrugged. “Fine, I guess. Though my therapist might think I’m a bloodthirsty murderer for how happy I am about Jefferies.”

I shrugged. “Well, then, in that case, it makes us a good pair.”

Beckett chuckled, threaded his fingers through mine, and kissed my hand, steering with his other one.

“Honestly, it went fine. I told him about the penthouse. He agrees with me. It’s just a good investment.”

I rolled my eyes. Unbelievable. I’d mentioned to Beckett that I might like to go to business school and study more after we graduated. Soren had recommended New York. Beckett’s father seemed to enjoy talking about the company with me. Soren loved numbers, and investments like the kind his company made were fascinating to me. We talked for hours sometimes, much to Beckett’s annoyance. Beckett responded to my musing by buying me a penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park as an early Christmas gift. The man was a maniac… but I secretly loved how extra he was. He didn’t do anything small. He didn’t know how.

“And if you end up getting scouted by a team other than a New York one…are we going to live apart?”

“Under absolutely no circumstances. In fact, to make sure that isn’t even an option, I have something for you. Check the glove compartment.”

I opened it curiously. I never knew what to expect from him. Even then, the small velvet ring box made my mouth drop open.

“What the hell?” I opened it just as Beckett pulled over and turned to me. “This is a ring.”

“The first of many.” He took the box from me and plucked the slim band with the sparkling light blue stone from it. He slid it onto my finger while I was still frozen with shock.

He nodded approvingly at the sight of it on my finger. “I’ve been carrying that around for weeks. If you’re ever in doubt whether we might live separately after graduation, just look down there, and remember that it’s not going to happen. I’m not letting you away from me… ever.”

“Are you asking me to marry you?” I squeaked.

Beckett chuckled. “You think I’d ask you here, pulled over by the side of the road, with a ring less than 15 carats? I plan to spoil you Tiny, in a million different ways. I will ask you to marry me, and you will say yes… but in the meantime, just think of this as a reminder… of who you belong to.” He lifted my hand to his lips and kissed the back of it, like a knight pledging fealty.

“So… what about after graduation, if you get scouted by a faraway team?” I wondered. I knew how important hockey was to Beckett. Would he choose me over his dream team?

He shrugged. “So, maybe I’ll just hang up my skates. You can take over the Anderson investment firm from my father and let him retire, and I’ll stay at home…with our five kids.”

“Five?” I squeaked and gave him an aghast look.

“Six?”

I stared wordlessly at him, and he laughed.

“Don’t worry about me, Cinderella. Whether I play for New York, raise our own team of Hellions at home, or work with you and Soren for the family business…one thing will always be true: You’re not getting rid of me that easily.”

“I suppose we should talk about codependency at some point,” I suggested.

Beckett just chuckled. “Call it codependency, call it obsession…I call it love. You belong to me,” he started.

“Andyoubelong tome,” I reminded him.

He grinned. “Hell yes, I do. And we belong together, Cinderella, and happy ever after.”
