“Of course it is. Can I be as organized as you when I grow up, please?”

Lily rolled her eyes. “Very funny. I’ll help you later. See you soon.”

She disappeared out of the room, and I flopped back on the bed. A hopeful sort of happiness filled my chest. Maybe it was all going to be fine.

The door handle turned again, and I didn’t bother sitting up to speak.

“What did you forget?” I asked Lily.

But it wasn’t Lily’s soft voice that answered me. Far from it.

“What the fuck are you doing in my room, Cinderella?”

Beckett

I blinkedat the figure lying on the bed in my room. I had to be hallucinating, because there was no way that Eve Martino was sprawled on my bed. Her ripped jeans hugged her legs, and her oversized plaid shirt had slipped off her shoulder. She sat up, her dark hair tousled, and looked at me with her huge deer eyes.

What the fuck?

It was so perplexing, I ducked my head back out the door and checked the names on it.

Martino/Anderson.

Nope. It was the right place. I shouldered into the room and set down my heavy bags. Eve stood, shifting nervously from foot to foot.

“I said, what the fuck are you doing in my room?” I fought for calm, but I was rapidly losing my cool. I’d had the hardest summer of my life, and seeing Eve was a trigger like no other. No one could make me lose my cool like this…well, except maybe my father.

“I-I’m staying here,” she said quietly.

“The fuck you are,” I argued.

“My room got canceled by accident, and Asher’s didn’t, so this is where they put me.”

“They? Who’s they? Do you expect me to believe that the housing office put a girl in the Hellions’ dorm on purpose?”

I turned and strode out of the room.

Eve was hot on my heels. “Where are you going?”

“To the office. I’m sure we can get this straightened out.”

“But there aren’t any subsidized housing places left,” she protested.

“Not my problem. I just know you’re not staying here.” I’d gotten to the door to the hall and wrenched it open.

Eve threw herself in front of it at the last moment, a movement that brought her crashing into my chest. Her hands burned where they pressed into me, reminding me of that night. That night then reminded me of her silence, and the way she’d left me to bleed for her, and never even given me a second thought.

“Don’t,” I bit out, grabbing her by the wrists and jerking her away from me. “Don’t fucking touch me.”

“I didn’t mean to! I didn’t want to,” she argued back. Her dark eyes were full of shock and worry.

Good. Let her sweat something for once. She deserved it.

“Then make sure you don’t.” I dropped her wrists like her skin was dirty. “What?”

“Please, don’t go over there and make a fuss. I don’t have anywhere else to go.”

I let out a bitter laugh and tilted my head to the side, considering her closely. “Are you seriously asking me to feel sorry for you right now? You are asking me to have compassion for you?”
