She held my gaze like a champ. She was utterly shameless.

“You really are a piece of work, Evie. I underestimated you all these years. You’re a little devil in sheep’s clothing. A snake in a person suit.”

“What are you talking about? You’re the asshole here,” she stated flatly and folded her arms over her chest.

My heart just about stopped from outrage. “What the fuck did you just say to me?”

She tossed her head, haughty like a queen. “I said you’re the asshole. You can’t even be civil after what happened that night. I’ve done nothing to you?—”

I pulled her away from the door and strode out. One more second of listening to her cruel, unbelievable words and I’d strangle her and happily go to jail for it.

“Beckett! Wait just a second and hear me out,” she was saying as she ran after me down the hall.

I turned the corner sharply and collided with someone. Eve walked into my back.

“Hey! Traffic pileup on the second floor,” a familiar voice joked.

Another hockey player stood beside us. I took a second to place him. Tyler – one of the star players for a different school. He’d been friends with Lily, and later, became close with Cayden. He’d started coming to parties at Cliff Point by the end of senior year.

He smiled at me. “Hey, man! How’s it going?”

“Fine,” I managed. I didn’t want to be a dick to Tyler, but I could barely tear my murderous thoughts away from Eve, standing by my side.

He looked at her, and his grin got wider. “Eve, right? It’s good to see you. I’m glad to finally be on the same team as you guys.”

“I’ll catch up with you later, I have to go and take care of something,” I told Tyler, stepping around him.

“Yeah, he’s got to scuttle down to the housing office and get me kicked out of here.” Eve’s voice was bitter.

“What?” Tyler asked.

I moved toward the top of the stairs, trying to drown Eve out but not fully able to.

“Basically, they canceled my housing place instead of my brother’s when he transferred, and there’s nowhere for me to go, except here. Beckett doesn’t want to share a room with me, so he’s going to complain and get me kicked out. The world revolves around him, after all.”

“Shit, are you serious? That sucks. I have a double room, but my roommate changed their mind at the last minute and went to Portland. You can stay with me if you want.”

I found myself stopping midstride and turning back.

Eve was looking at Tyler like he was her white knight. “Oh my God, are you serious? But I couldn’t put you out like that. You don’t even know me.”

“It’s no big deal. I was actually a little bummed not to have a roommate. I like the banter, and you’re Lil’s best friend.”

Tyler was grinning down at Eve with ease, and it felt like a hand had wrapped around my heart. She thought she could just jump into someone else’s arms and solve all her problems? A hero waiting in the wings to make the big bad Beckett leave her alone? I didn’t fucking think so.

I strode back toward them.

“Don’t get involved with Martino drama, man, believe me, you’ll regret it. I know I do,” I snapped at Tyler.

I could feel Eve’s eyes burning into me. She was standing on the other side of the scar, and I was vainly glad. It was ugly as fuck and a constant reminder of that night.

“It’s okay. I want to help,” Tyler said.

I had the sudden, irrational urge to punch him.

He cocked an eyebrow at Eve. “What do you say, roomie? Should we get your stuff moved in? Get out the big guy’s way?” He jerked his head toward me good-naturedly, blissfully unaware of just how much he was pissing me off right now.

“There’s nothing I’d like more,” Eve said.
