I drove us over there and parked outside the house, the Maserati attracting the attention of the mouth-breathing hoard. It was one of four cars I kept on campus grounds. I had a special pass to bring as many vehicles as I wanted inside, unlike the rest of the student body.

The house was packed with sweating, grunting guys who were so drunk they couldn’t see straight. I shouldered through the rabble, sober and bigger than every single one. I glanced around and found no trace of Eve.

Cayden caught sight of Lily and plowed through the crowd to reach her, scattering drunk bodies in his wake. They kissed for an unbearable length of time before surfacing.

“Where’s your friend?” I shouted toward Lily over the terrible music.

Lily shrugged. “I can’t find her. I just got here, too.”

I scanned the bottom floor and even walked a loop. A dark, writhing sort of fury bubbled in my gut.Where the hell is she?Fucking with Eve was my new hobby –mine, and no one better get in my way.

I glanced up the stairs. She’d better not be in a bedroom with someone. If she was, one of these frat bozos was going to die tonight.

I headed up the stairs two at a time and started opening doors on the landing. Couples in various stages of undress sprang apart in my wake.

I opened the door to the last bedroom and scanned the place, and immediately recognized Eve’s backpack sitting on the bed. It was at least five years old, a style that used to be popular but hadn’t been for years.

A sandy-haired football player sat on the bed, scrolling through his phone, a beer in hand. I recognized him from the game the other night. This fucker was about to have a bad day. The sound of violent retching came from the adjoining bathroom.

“Hey, man, this room is occupied,” the douchebag said, finally looking up from his phone. His eyes lit in recognition. “You’re Beckett Anderson, right?”

I entered the room fully and closed the door behind me, locking it with a turn of my wrist. “And you are?”

“Warner James. I play football here.”

“Who’s in the bathroom, Warner?” I asked calmly.

“Some chick, my cousin’s roommate. Eve or something. Don’t waste your time, though, bro, I’ve got dibs.”

I tapped my chin with a finger. “Oh, really. How does dibs work in this case?”

Warner grinned. “It means if you want some, you have to wait your turn.”

“My turn. And what if I don’t want to wait my turn?”

Warner’s grin slipped a notch. “Too bad.”

I tutted and shook my head. “I don’t think it is too bad for me…I think it’s too bad for you.”

Warner was clearly trying to work out what the fuck I was driving at. “You know her or something?”

“Both.” There was enough menace in that word to send Warner backpedaling.

“Nothing happened. I didn’t try anything. She’s too out of it. That’s not my style.”

Tasting blood in the air, I smiled at him. Crunching some fucker’s nose under my fist sounded fun right about now. “Isn’t it? But I thought you had dibs.”

Warner shrugged. “I was just kidding. What’s it to you anyway? Are you her boyfriend? I hadn’t heard that the high-and-mighty rich boy on campus had a girlfriend, especially not one like her.”

I smirked at him and pushed off the door, reaching him in two long strides. Warner was on his feet, meeting me chest to chest.

“Elaborate on the ‘not like her’ comment,” I murmured, low and lethal.

Warner was silent.

“Go on, Mr. Chatty. Elaborate, if you fucking dare.”

A muscle worked in the dumb jock’s jaw, and he shrugged again, with none of the confidence of before. “I don’t know – poor, a scholarship kid, like my cousin. I didn’t mean any shade by it, it’s just facts.”
