I didn’t stop to think, I just reacted. My fist met Warner’s nose with a crunch, and blood splattered my hand as I hit him. He tried to twist away, but he wasn’t fast enough. I was used tobashing into people; violence was part of my nature. He didn’t stand a chance.

I used his T-shirt to hold him in place while I hit him. He fell to his knees, and I kicked him in the side. I didn’t know exactly what it was that had set me off. Calling her poor, bringing her up here when she was too wasted to stand, or maybe it was just because he was getting in my way. Regardless, my anger was scorching hot.

A loud bang and the sound of breaking glass in the bathroom broke through the red haze descending over me.

“She better back up that nothing happened, or I swear, they’re going to be cleaning your bone fragments off the football field for years.”

Warner scoffed, but it was hollow. He was scared. Good, he should be.

I smirked at him, summoning my most depraved rich-asshole smile. “And don’t forget, this high-and-mighty billionaire can do whatever the fuck he wants with you and your entire family.”

I leaned in, and Warner stiffened.

“To me, you’re just as poor as Eve. Everyone on this campus is. You don’t have enough money to save you from me, and if you did something to her – no one will.” I pushed him back sharply, and he fell on the bed with a grunt.

“Get the fuck out of here before I decide to throw you out the window,” I tossed at him before heading to the closed bathroom door. Something occurred to me on the way. A method to kill two birds with one stone. “And, asshole – that girl in there isn’tgoing to become a cheerleader. Ever. Do you understand? She’s not fodder for the team to harass. She’s out. Make sure.”

He was bent over, still gripping his middle. His bloodied face reflected his confusion.Christ, he was dumb.I took a step toward him, and he flinched.

“I’ve got it. She’s out.”

“Now get out of my fucking sight,” I murmured, trying the door to the bathroom.

It was locked. I knocked loudly.

“Eve, open the door.”

Silence met my command.

“Eve, open it now, or I’ll break the fucking thing down.”

Silence again. Worry chased through me. What if she’d broken something and hurt herself, or was choking on her own vomit at this very second? Then she’d be gone, just like my mom, and I’d be alone again. Always alone.

Without another thought, I stepped back and aimed a kick at the door. The lock splintered easily, and the door swung in.

Eve was slumped on the floor beside the toilet. She had a broken water glass clutched in one hand. Red droplets were scattered on the tile, and a couple of bloody handprints decorated her tight white dress. Her skin glowed in the dim light, a dynamite combination with the pale dress.

She was hurt. Fury like nothing I’d ever known flooded me.

I reached for the glass first, untangling her fingers from the shard. She had a few deep cuts.

I was too late. I should have been here sooner. While I’d been a fucking coward, putting off going home and seeing her after she’d comforted me last night, she’d been getting shit-faced or maybe even drugged.

I grabbed a clean-looking towel and wrapped it around her hand.

“Asher?” Eve muttered as I touched her hand.

When I didn’t answer, she tried again. “Lil?”

“Guess again, Cinderella,” I murmured, wiping her face and pushing her hair back.

Her eyelids fluttered, and she moaned softly. “No, not you.”

I reached under her and lifted her into my arms. There was no way she was walking out of here. Holding her twinged something deep in my chest.

“Me,” I confirmed, to her disappointment. It didn’t bother me too much. I was used to being a disappointment to the people in my life.

I stepped over the broken glass and went back into the bedroom. Warner, the player with a death wish, had left. I set Eve down on the bed for a second and reached for a blanket to wrap around her. She was all curves, barely concealed by that fucking excuse for a dress. There was no way I was carrying her through a house of braying frat boys like that.
