“You landed a quad.”
“I did. I don’t even remember it. Is that weird? It’s like I blacked out.”
Chandler laughed and said, “I love you.”
“I think they want to interview you,” Belle told her, nodding toward Kendra.
“No, babe. Trust me; they want to interview us.” She stood up and took Belle’s hand. “Hi, Kendra.”
“Well, you two certainly surprised everyone tonight,” Kendra said without them being on air yet.
“Yeah, I guess we did,” Chandler replied and took Belle’s hand. “You still want to talk to us?”
“Me? Definitely. The network? We’ll see.” Kendra winked at Chandler. Then, she turned her attention to the camera. “That was quite a performance. Belle, you landed a quadruple tonight. Was that always in the program, or did you add it at the last minute? I thought I saw it was supposed to be a triple.”
“It was either, really. If I felt like I could hit it, the plan was that I would.”
“Well, you did, and it was amazing. Chandler, that was a great performance from you two. How do you think the judges will score it?”
“I have no idea. We’ll have to wait and see. But I’m hoping we can at least move up to third. A lot of great skaters left, so I’m not sure where we’ll end up, but I’m really proud of us and happy with our performance. We really left it out there last night and tonight.”
“I’d say you did. Tell me about that kiss,” Kendra prompted and shifted the microphone over to Belle, who silently checked in with Chandler.
“We’re together,” Belle announced. “We have been for a while. Not exactly since we started skating together, but close to it. We also knew each other as teenagers, and, well, I was in love with her then, too, so I am very, very happy right now.”
Chandler rested her head on Belle’s shoulder and said, “Same.”
Kendra let them go, and they sat back down just in time to see their scores roll in. Chandler covered her mouth when she saw them.
“Oh,” Belle let out.
“Yeah,” Chandler added with her mouth still covered. “I can’t believe it.”
“I bet they’re all just Swifties and loved our music choices,” Belle joked.
Chandler laughed and pulled Belle into a hug. They were in first place. Lincoln and Alexa still had to skate, so they’d probably at least move down to second, if not down to third or even fourth, but for right now, in this moment, she was in first place with her girlfriend, and she’d live on that forever.
“I love you.” She kissed Belle quickly, not caring that the camera was still on them.
“I love you, too.”
CHAPTER 37
“No, you should wear only that today,” Belle said.
Chandler shook her head and rolled her eyes.
“I can’t wear only this to work. I’m pretty sure I’d get arrested.”
“It’s not really your work, though. You don’t have to go in. You know that, right?” Belle asked as she pulled a very naked Chandler Wolfe between her legs as she sat on the end of the bed.
Chandler was standing in front of her, wearing only her silver medal from their final competition together.
They’d come in second by the end of the night, with Lincoln Cates and his partner getting the win. Belle might have been biased because she thought her quad should’ve put them over the top, but Chandler had been right: the judges were never going to give them the win at nationals. They couldn’t have their winner be a same-sex couple when that same couple couldn’t actually compete in the Olympic Games. They needed it to be Lincoln and Alexa, but they couldn’t deny the high score they’d had to give Chandler and Belle for performing the best skate of their lives. So, Chandler and her had both earned a silver medal, and it would likely be the third-place finishers who would be going to the Games instead of them.
Belle didn’t care, though. She’d just always loved skating and being on the ice, feeling that cool calm rush over her in a world that her brain didn’t always understand. If she got to skate with Chandler until they were out there with walkers in front of them, helping them stay up, she’d be the happiest woman in the world.
“I was thinking about that, actually,” Chandler said as she wrapped her arms around Belle’s neck.
