“You’re sure?”
“I went to the doctor while you were in a meeting with that vendor. I didn’t tell you because I wanted to be sure. The home tests were all positive, and I took, like, five of those without you knowing and threw the evidence out in the dumpster here because I wanted it to be a surprise.”
“You’re having a baby?”
“I am. Well, we are. So, Jack’s room when he visits is going to be our nursery, or we could get a bigger place, I suppose. I–”
Belle’s lips were on her own, and Chandler wasn’t even sure how Belle had gotten over the benches that had been between them, but Chandler was pressed against the row of lockers behind her now, and Belle was holding both of her cheeks in her hands and kissing her over and over again.
“I love you. I love you.”
“I love you, too,” Chandler said and pulled her wife in for a hug.
“We have to call Dad,” Belle said excitedly. “He’s going to want to race home.”
“Why? It’s not like his grandkid is popping out anytime soon. He’s got the next several months to keep enjoying his trip.”
“You know how he is.”
“I know,” she said and watched as Belle pulled out her phone. “Oh, you mean now?”
“Yeah. Why not? Is that okay?”
“Of course, it is, babe,” Chandler said and rested her body against Belle’s.
Belle wrapped an arm around her and held her close while she called her father to tell him the good news.
“Dad, it worked. She’s pregnant. We’re going to be moms. You’re going to be a grandpa.”
Chandler heard the happiness in Belle’s voice and snuggled in closer.
“We don’t know that yet. She just found out she’s having a baby. And we don’t want one of those big gender reveal party things, so we’ll just call you and tell you when we know.” Belle paused. “No, you don’t have to come home. She’s not even showing.” She paused again. “Probably. I don’t know. I just got the news myself, so I’ll call you when we figure it all out. We’re going out to dinner to celebrate right now, and then, we’ll go home and tell Cat and Jack. Babe, your parents?”
Chandler realized that Belle was talking to her now, so she shook her head.
“We’ll tell them later, Dad.” Belle paused again. “Yeah, I know. But it’s Chandler’s decision when they find out, okay?”
Chandler listened to the rest of their conversation as she held on to her wife. She and her parents still weren’t close, but they’d spent the past several years trying to work on having a relationship that didn’t involve figure skating. Catalina was probably madder at their parents than Chandler was initially, but she’d cooled off once she’d gotten married and had Jack. Their parents still lived in Europe for most of the year, but they stopped by during the holidays, and now, at least, for Jack’s birthday, where they showered him with presents. Chandler knew she’d tell them, but she didn’t want this news to be about them right now. She only wanted it to be about her, Belle, and even Cat and Jack and Cat’s husband, who hadn’t traveled with them for this visit because he had to work. That was her family, and she loved them. She loved her parents, too, but she was still working on actually liking them.
“I can’t believe it.” Belle must have hung up because she was holding Chandler with both arms wrapped around her now, and Chandler felt tears on her neck. “We’re having a baby.”
“What did your dad want to know, babe?”
“He just mentioned that you’d be taking maternity leave, and he needs to get back before that so you can take the time off you need. Sheryl was practically screaming with happiness in the background. Her two kids haven’t given her any grandbabies yet, so she’s very excited. She yelled something about knitting a baby blanket on their drive back home and making it in neutral colors. I could barely understand her.”
“They’re both excited?”
“Very. But not as excited as I am.”
Chandler pulled out of the embrace and said, “Let’s get out of here and maybe skip the nice dinner. I thought I wanted that, but I think I want to be home.”
“You want to tell Cat?”
“And Jack that he’s going to have a little cousin soon. I want to be around our family.”
“Whatever you want,” Belle replied and cupped Chandler’s cheek before she kissed her. “I am so happy. You make me so happy.”
“Oh, babe… You have no idea.” Chandler kissed her right back.
