“Feels amazing. Don’t stop.”

“I’ll do this as long as you want me to.”

What was up with him? He was acting strange. Not bad strange but different. He’d always been crystal clear about boundaries, about making sure I knew this was just sex. But he’d taken care of me the night before, and he’d spent the night, and now he was here in my shower, washing my hair. I wasn’t objecting, but I didn’t understand. Something had changed, but I’d missed that memo, apparently.

Still, I’d take everything from him he was willing to give me. “Want me to do your hair?”

He shot me a sexy grin. “I’d love that.”

“I don’t have the fancy shampoo you probably use, though. Just whatever’s on sale at the grocery store, which is the cheap-ass stuff.”

He quirked an eyebrow. “Are you calling me a snob?”

“No, but I can’t imagine your hair looks that good using two-dollar-a-bottle shampoo.”

He grinned. “Two dollars? What, did you buy it in the seventies?”

I slapped his ass, the smack reverberating through the bathroom. “Smartass.”

“Oh, I didn’t know you were into spanking. Kinky…”

I dumped a healthy squeeze of shampoo between my hands and reached for his hair. “I’m sure you’ve done all kinds of kinky stuff.”

He was quiet for a few beats. “I’ve had a lot of sex if that’s what you mean.”

He’d closed his eyes, which made it easier to talk to him. “No, I mean kinky stuff. Like you said, spanking and whatnot. And for the record, I don’t judge you for your sex life. Why would I? There’s nothing wrong with liking sex or having sex as long as it’s between consenting adults.”

“A lot of people are okay with that in theory…until it’s someone they’re dating.”

My hands halted. “Dating?”

His eyes flew open. “Fir…”

He leaned back, inadvertently directing the water beam on his head, sending soapy water down—straight into his eyes. He clenched them shut, but it was already too late.

“Ouch… Goddammit, that stings.”

I could barely resist smiling. It wasn’t funny, of course, but seeing Tomás complain and curse because he’d gotten shampoo in his eyes was endearing. When he rubbed his eyes, I slapped his hands back. “That’ll only make it worse.”

“But it hurts.”

“I know, but let me rinse it out.”

“How do you know that will help?”

This time I couldn’t hold back a chuckle. “Because I’m not only a doctor but a father of two who’s been here before?”

“Right.” He looked sheepish. “Sorry.”

I rinsed off his face, removing the last bit of suds with my hands. “That better?”

He blinked open his eyes, which were teary and red-rimmed. How could this man look so stinking adorable when he was this hot? “I think so.”

He said little as we finished showering and toweled off. Had I done something wrong? Maybe he hadn’t liked me making light of the soap incident. But that seemed way too petty for Tomás.

We both got dressed, and I kept stealing glances at him. Where had we gone wrong? He looked serious and withdrawn. Something was bothering him, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

When I walked to the door, he grabbed my wrist and held me back. “Fir, can we talk?”
