“I know. I feel bad, though. I’m sure you had imagined your first time to be much more special than that.”

“I don’t think I had actually given it much thought before now. I mean, I know I wanted my first to be memorable, but I never really had, like, specifics on how I wanted it to go or who it had to be with. But I wasn’t disappointed at the very least. It’s all that was on my mind while I heated up breakfast. We’ll just have to tone it down a notch next time so June doesn’t get suspicious.” I found myself talking too freely, making suggestions I should never have.

“Next time?”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I mean, that’s if you want, though.”

“There’s not going to be a next time, Madison. I’m really sorry, but I can’t do this with you. You work for me, and I think it’s only sane to maintain our cordial work relationship. Besides, I don’t think I want to be getting along with any lady for now. I’m not completely over Olivia just yet, and I don’t think I’m quite ready to move on. Last night was great, and let’s keep it just between us. But don’t count on it ever happening again.” He tried to force a smile while I swallowed my saliva in sheer embarrassment. I had obviously gotten ahead of myself.

“Yeah, of course. I totally understand,” I said.

“I’ll see to it that your windows get fixed, and I’ll get you a new blanket so you can sleep comfortably in your room.”

“Yeah, of course, sir. Thank you.”

There was an awkward silence for a while until Amy came to the rescue.

“Hudson! Dude! Where are you?”

Hudson went out into the hallway to meet Amy. She had begun to wonder where he was. I could hear their voices echo in the hallway.

“Did you just come out of the kitchen?”

“Yes. I heard you call out my name. What’s up?”

“I hope you haven’t gone to upset that girl again,” she said, lowering her tone. However, her voice was still very much audible.

“No, I haven’t done anything to Madison. Where’s June?”

“I was coming to let you know that I’m taking her to get some ice cream.”

“Oh, all right. Just a tiny little cup, though. She’s had plenty of that this week.”

“You would have to play bad cop yourself. I’m aiming to be the cool aunt today. I’ll get her as many as she wants.”

“Could you help me grab some blankets on your way back, too? The exact ones you helped get for my room and June’s.”

“Something wrong with yours?”

“Oh no, it’s for Madison. She’s allergic to polyester as well. We didn’t get to replace the one in her room back then.”

“Oh, all right then. Quite thoughtful of you to not forget.”

“She reminded me in the kitchen just now. She could barely sleep last night. I had to let her crash on the couch.”

“Poor girl. How uncomfortable that must have been. I’ll stop by at the supermarket to have it taken care of.”

“Thank you.”

It was just Hudson and I left in the whole house. He had gone up to his room as soon as Amy drove off, attempting to keep away from me.

I had decided not to think too much about it. At least he didn’t seem to be such an ass to me anymore.

Maria came home that same day, much later in the evening. I had missed having her around, as well as June. She observed that there was something unusual about me. According to her, it was the first time I didn’t seem so agitated, especially after being left alone with Hudson through the weekend. I contemplated telling her what had happened while she was away. I eventually decided that it was best to keep it a secret for now, especially given that Hudson wanted it so, and there was likely never going to be a repeat of it.

Hudson had sent for a repair man the next day to fix my window. I stayed back and monitored the process while Hudson went ahead to drop June off at school. He had a lot of work to get done throughout the week, so it was my responsibility to bring June from school every day until he said otherwise. I suspected he was just trying to get busy so he could avoid me even more.
