Hudson

“The venue for the bachelorette party hasn’t been decided, but even when it is decided, be rest assured I’m not snitching,” I said.

“I’m your sister, Hudson. Whose side are you on?”

“I’m on the side of justice. He is allowed to have one last night of fun without having you ladies crash the party. Come on—you know the guy. He’s not irresponsible. He wouldn’t do anything that begs questioning.”

“I’m not worried about him. I mean, I wouldn’t have said yes if I didn’t trust him. But I know his cousin will be there too. He’s flying all the way from London for this. He’s told me before now how much of a terrible influence the guy could be on him. All he just needs to do is ensure he has too much to drink, and he wouldn’t even know when he does something silly.”

“What then am I there for? Chill, sis. I got your back!” I got her to smile and let go of her paranoia after many minutes of talking.

“All right, thank you. Is Madison home? I haven’t seen her since I arrived.”

“Oh yeah, she’s with June in her room. She’s helping her with a class project.”

“Oh, can I bother you to drive us to the boutique? Madison and I. Since it’s the weekend, I thought I should pick out my dress today.”

“Please don’t tell me I would have to wait until you’re done.”

“I promise, I’m less indecisive now. Besides, Madison is going to help me do the picking. She’ll be picking hers, too. I intend to make her my chief maid of honor.”

“Oh, have you asked her?”

“I actually forgot to mention it all along. But I don’t think she would decline. I’ll just tell her once they’re done. In the meantime, let me go fix myself a cup of coffee. I couldn’t sleep much last night.”

“The bid?” I asked, knowing how much effort she put into her job. I felt bad also because I was her boss. It felt like I was putting too much pressure on her.

“Yeah. I had to do some touch-ups here and there,” she called out from the hallway leading into the kitchen. I patiently waited for her to return, holding a cup of coffee.

“Madison could have helped with that after she was done.”

“Oh, but she can’t tutor your child?” I stared at her with inquisitive eyes.

“June told me. She’s a kid. What do you expect? Madison is not your maid, Hudson.”

“I didn’t say she was.”

“Then, she has no business fixing me a cup of coffee when I can do that conveniently on my own. Unless she insists or offers to do it.”

June was coming down the stairs with Madison now, not giving me the opportunity to say another word.

“Auntie!” June ran down the stairs to embrace Amy. She was very fond of her aunt, mostly because she always got her treats.

“Be careful now, June,” Madison warned with a smile on her face as she watched June race down without caution. We hadn’t really spoken much after what happened the past week.

She had taken a cue from my actions and had now begun to avoid me more than I had wished for. She barely even looked me in the face. I couldn’t tell if she was upset about how I acted after that night or if she was just following what I asked—to act like nothing had happened and maintain a cordial relationship. It was almost like we didn’t even live in the same house anymore.

“Hi, baby!” Amy stretched out her hands and lifted June in the air.

“Hello, Amy. When did you come?” Madison asked.

“Not too long ago. I heard you were helping June out. I didn’t want to distract you two. You’re done now, though, right?”

“Yeah, we’re all done,” Madison replied, brushing June’s hair backward with her hands.

“Great, because I would like you to go to the bridal store with me. I need to pick a wedding dress. Also, you don’t mind being my chief maid of honor, do you?”

“Most certainly not. I’ll be delighted, Amy.”
