When we got back to the house, I took my shoes off and went straight to bed. I just wanted to sleep and pretend like the events of the night never happened. I slept on Hudson’s bed that night. He got into bed shortly after and planted a kiss on my forehead. I snuggled into his arms, and he wrapped them around me.

“Your hands feel so warm,” I blurted, drifting off to sleep shortly after.

The next morning, I woke up to a cup of hot coffee.

“You’re finally up,” he said, grabbing his briefcase from the table.

“What time is it? How are you leaving already?” I reached out to check the time on my wristwatch.

“You seemed really tired from all the socializing last night, so I decided to allow you to rest well. Drink up your coffee now. I’ll go on and take June to school. She’s already dressed and waiting downstairs.”

“I didn’t realize I had slept for so long.”

“That’s fine, babe. Please pick her up later today. I’ve got a lot of work at the office today.”

“Will do,” I echoed, picking up the coffee cup from the cupboard where it lay. While I sipped, he kissed me on the forehead and turned to leave. “Check your phone, by the way. Someone’s been trying to get a hold of you.”

I immediately picked up my phone to see who it was. The contact was unsaved. I was still pondering on the possibility of it being Dylan again when my phone beeped twice. A text had come in.

“So, you’re really not going to pick up my calls, huh? Do you really think that your actions will get me to back off? I’ve never been known to back down from a fight, honey, even if it threatens to cost me an arm and a leg. I’m coming for you, best believe it. I want you with me, and that’s exactly what it’s going to be. We’ll see just how long you’ll be able to keep this up.”

A taint of fear gripped my heart. What was he going to do? Had I gotten myself involved with a maniac? How was I going to get out of this one?

I bit my fingers in agitation, so many possibilities flooding my mind. I hoped that somehow our paths never crossed again. Oklahoma wasn’t such a small city after all; I just hoped that by some sheer luck, he would not be able to track down my new location with my newly found family.

I deleted the message and dropped my phone on the bed. I fell back on my pillow and prayed silently.

Chapter 13

Madison

A week had passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from Dylan again. I was grateful; it meant he probably hadn’t found us yet, or perhaps he had had a change of heart, realizing that it was just plain stupid fighting over someone who had no interest in being with him.

I was glad he didn’t turn out to be such a maniac after all. That would have been such a terrible profile for his stunning look. Dylan was a very attractive man, like an athlete. His light skin was spotless and glistened under the sun rays from the earliest pictures of him I had seen.

His eyes were the sexiest I had ever seen—cobalt blue and wet like the sea. He was well-endowed, too; that much was clear from the photos we shared and the erotic video calls. And his words? They were both sweet and naughty—a perfect blend! I was a teenage girl with needs, and irrespective of the distance between us, he somehow convinced me to settle for the satisfaction that he could offer on cam. It seemed reasonable enough to me.

And even though I had craved more many times back then, I wasn’t bold enough to go for it, not with all the serial killer movies I had seen. What we had was what I would term “convenient.”

Hudson’s birthday was just around the corner; I had found out from June. She was planning on getting him a little present, with my help, of course, and my money too.

In the spirit of everything good worth celebrating, I decided to throw my man a little party. I had no idea how or what I was going to do, so I solicited Amy’s help. She had already returned from her honeymoon, bubbling with life and countless tales of the experience. Hudson had gotten sick of hearing them already.

“First things first, the guest list. Who are we inviting to the party?” Amy asked.

“I don’t know. He doesn’t seem to have a lot of friends,” I commented.

“You know him too well,” Amy teased, winking at me.

She hadn’t really brought up the conversation about my new status with her brother, almost like she had already seen it coming and wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

“So just family, basically. Then some guys from work and the few friends and acquaintances we can find,” Any continued.

“There’s this guy he introduced to me once. Uhm, I think his name was Dean.”

Amy said, “That man is a chatterbox, but I guess you can invite him too.” It was impossible to hide the irritation on her face.

I couldn’t resist the urge to find out what she wasn’t telling me. “I see you know him well. So he’s a good friend of Hudson’s, I suppose?”
