All that was left now was to think of a way to ensure Dylan clicked on the link and downloaded the virus.

“I’ve seen it. Thank you so much. Would you like a wired transfer?”

“Oh no, don’t bother. It wasn’t that big a deal.”

I was beyond elated. I thanked him again and excused myself to use the restroom. I left my bag on his table and walked over to the restroom.

I stood in front of the mirror and took deep breaths. I copied the link and forwarded it to Dylan with the caption: “I’m a few blocks from your house now. This is how I would like for you to receive me. Brings back old memories.”

His profile read that he was online. He had sent me the photos and videos from his desktop. He had his Skype installed on it. I patiently waited for him to open the message. He did so after about a minute.

I still wasn’t satisfied. It was one thing to open the message and another to actually click on the link. I sincerely hoped that he did the latter as well. I got into one of the toilets and eased myself. Then, I washed my hands and walked back to Lance.

“He opened the message quite all right, but is there a way to know if he actually clicked on the link or downloaded the virus?” I asked.

“Can I see? Is he tech-savvy?” Lance inquired.

“Not quite. He’s just used to the normal operations.”

“He opened the link. Casually dial his line to confirm.”

My heart leaped in excitement as I phoned Dylan, taking a few steps away from my hero’s desk. He picked up almost immediately.

“Hey, Dee, did you get what I sent?” I asked.

“Do you have any idea what you just cost me? I had very vital documents on my personal computer!” he exclaimed, and I could feel the rage burning from his insides. The tone of his voice conveyed his agitation as well.

“Well, you know what they say—don’t mix business with pleasure.”

“You think you’ve played me, huh? Did you really think I wouldn’t have a duplicate of those photos and videos elsewhere? On my phone, perhaps?”

“Oh, you do? Then forward them to me again, and let me know all your plans if I don’t leave Hudson.”

“You would be a fool to think that this is over. I’ll get you back, even if it’s the last thing I do.”

“I’m eager to see how you intend to achieve that. All the best, nonetheless! A quick piece of advice, though—perhaps channel all of this energy into your work. You’d be more productive. Don’t you think?”

“I’m coming for you, my love. Rest assured.”

“Then I’ll be forced to get a restraining order from the court. Have a good life.” I dropped the call before he could say another word. “Yes!” I exclaimed, turning around excitedly and bumping into Hudson.

“Hey, easy there,” he cautioned.

I instantly squeezed him in a tight embrace and kissed him.

“Oh, wow. Whatever’s got you this excited must be really big a deal. What are you even doing here? My secretary informed me that you had come to see me and you had requested a cup of coffee. But when she returned with the coffee, she couldn’t find you anywhere.”

“I decided to give myself a tour before she returned. Sorry about that. I was eager to see where you work and what the space looks like.”

“Oh, do you then like what you’ve seen so far?”

“I haven’t really seen a lot.”

“I’ll show you all that’s left to see then. Come with me.” He grabbed my hand with one hand and picked up my handbag with the other.

I whispered a “thank you” to the tech guy once more and left with Hudson.

Hudson took me to every floor in the complex. His office was the last place he took me to. It was magnificent and luxurious. The furniture was made from the finest wood with top-notch interior decoration.
