“This was a bad idea,” I muttered under my breath and got up from where I had been sitting.

I began to walk away toward the elevator. I got into the elevator with two other guys. One of the guys was lost in his phone and barely paid any attention to me. The second guy had his eyes on me for a while, like he was trying to make out my face.

I simply said hello and closed my eyes as the elevator descended to the second floor first, where my companions were headed.

“That looks like a malicious link. Don’t open it. They’re going to try to trick you into downloading a virus into your phone. When that happens, all of your files will get corrupted. Who sent you that?”

“The contact isn’t saved to my phone. It just popped up.”

“And you were just going to open it?”

“I was curious.”

The conversation had drawn my attention.

“How does that work?” I cut in, my eyes lit up in renewed hope.

“What? You mean a malicious link?”

“Yeah, how can one create something like that?”

“It’s pretty simple, actually.”

“And it can destroy all of the files on a person’s device?”

“Yes. But only if they fall for it and download a virus on the site.” How was I going to get Dylan to open one of those and click on download? The thought suddenly occupied my mind. It was worth a try.

“Hey, do I know you from somewhere?” the guy asked, drawing my attention back to him. His face didn’t seem unfamiliar, but I couldn’t quite place it yet.

“It’s possible. It’s a small town, after all,” was all I could manage to respond.

“I remember now. It was at the boss’s birthday party. The chemistry between the boss and yourself was electrifying. I couldn’t stop admiring.”

“Oh, that. I apologize for not recognizing you. There were a lot of new faces at the party. It’s so hard to keep track of every one of them.”

“That’s totally understandable. The name’s Lance, by the way. This is Jeremy,” he said, pointing to the other guy he was with.

“Nice to meet you guys. I’m Madison.”

“Great to see you again. You came to pay him a visit?”

“Oh, yes. But I’m done with that now. About that link you talked about, can you please create one for me? My whole life kinda depends on it right now.”

“I’m not so sure about that. You shouldn’t have any need for that.”

“I promise, I wouldn’t be asking if this wasn’t important. I don’t mind paying for it.”

He fixed his gaze on me, contemplating if he was to help me or not. I voiced out my plea repeatedly in a bid to convince him. Just then, the elevator chimed and opened up to the second floor.

“Come with me,” he said and proceeded to walk toward his desk.

I followed him to his desk, and he offered me a seat. He got to work while I waited patiently. He was done in less than five minutes.

“I’m forwarding the link to you now. Don’t open it.”

“Oh, okay. That was fast.”

“Glad to help.” He smiled and sent the link across.
