“Hello?” There was no response again. “Who the hell is this?” She was starting to get agitated.

Madison

The caller suddenly began to laugh hysterically—loudly, too. I turned in shock to where Amy and Hudson sat and put the call on loudspeaker mode.

“That’s definitely a prank call. What a crazy ass,” Amy retorted.

“Just end the call already,” Hudson opined, his back still turned to me.

I went with Hudson’s suggestion and dropped the phone on the couch. The phone rang again after about a minute.

“Just let it ring. Don’t bother picking it up,” Amy advised.

I took a deep breath and just allowed the phone to ring. I was getting enraged. The call had come to an end shortly after, but the caller wouldn’t give up. He called again. I grabbed the phone and picked up the call to give the fool a piece of my mind.

“I can see your jobless ass has got nothing—” I stopped abruptly as the voice I heard next brought me to tears, causing me to jerk up from the couch. “June? Baby, where are you? Whose phone is this? Did someone find you? We’ve been worried sick.”

Hudson and Amy ran to me in hasty steps. “Is that June?” Hudson asked, and I nodded in affirmation.

“Put the call on speakerphone,” he said, and I did exactly that.

June was crying as she spoke. “I’m scared, Madison. It’s so dark in here, and the men are mean and scary.”

“June, it’s Daddy. Don’t be scared, my love. We’re coming for you, okay? We’ll make sure you return home very soon. Just hang in there for me—”

“All right, that’s enough,” another voice came up in the background and took the phone from her.

“Daddy! Daddy, help me!”

“June! Baby!” Hudson yelled, his veins popping out. The veins on his forehead were the most prominent. He was vibrating in frustration, almost like he was going to blow up. He gnashed his teeth, shut his eyes tight, and clenched his fists.

“No need to try playing the hero. You will never find out where she is.” The voice sounded familiar. I wished and prayed so hard it wasn’t what I was thinking.

“Madison, I’m pretty sure you can hear me, right?” That confirmed my suspicion. Just when I thought all of the madness was over.

Hudson and Amy looked at me in confusion. They were yet to process what was going on.

“Who the hell is this?” Hudson retorted, fighting so hard not to lose his cool.

“You have what belongs to me. I tried to take it back calmly, but she wouldn’t oblige because of some stupid love she claims to have for you. I’m honestly shocked that she hasn’t told you about me.”

“Dylan, please, that little girl has nothing to do with all of these.”

“Dylan?” Hudson had begun to piece things together. “You’ve got to be kidding me! So you’re the one who’s kidnapped my kid? You’ve really got some nerves, I give you that!”

Amy was left in the dark. Only Hudson knew about Dylan. He hadn’t mentioned it to her. I specifically asked him not to.

“You may want to watch your tone there, lover boy, because, honestly, I don’t really like kids. She’s been crying since she got here, and I just might consider shutting her up permanently.”

I pleaded, “Please don’t hurt her, Dylan. I beg you. Just let her go. I’ll give you what you want. I’ll return to you, no questions asked.”

“Interesting. I’m glad you’re finally seeing things from my point of view. That’s an improvement. It’s a pity, though, that that’s not all I want anymore. I mean, I can get more since I call the shots here now, so why not take full advantage?”

“What is he saying now? What the hell are you saying, you asshole!” One glance at Hudson, and one could feel that he earnestly wished he could jump through the phone screen and grip Dylan’s neck, then slowly twist it to the sides. I had never seen Hudson so furious before; it was a terrifying sight.

“Don’t do this, Dylan. I beg of you. I’m willing to come and be with you now. That’s all you’ve wanted all along. Please just let June go and take me instead.”

“I want five million dollars in addition to returning you to me. You have forty-eight hours to comply, or I’ll do whatever I please with this little girl here.”
