As we drove away from the scene, I watched the officers cover Dylan’s dead body and place a handcuff on the wrists of his cohorts. It all felt like a bad dream to me, one that I desperately wanted to wake up from.

The ride was a very silent one at first. I kept my gaze on the scenery as we rode to the hospital, images of Dylan’s dead body still flashing in my face. I shut my eyes tightly and tried hard to push the image out of my mind, but it lingered, at least for the night and for a few more days.

“We found the earrings on the body of the truck you rode in with him,” the detective said, bringing me out of my head for a short moment.

“Yeah, I figured the car was made of steel, and the earrings were magnetic. I pretended to throw them away like he had ordered me to. I was just trying to make sure you could still find me.”

“That was a smart move.” The smile that followed as a response to his commendation was short-lived. I was in no mood to even extend the conversation. I looked out the window again, hoping he wouldn’t try to engage me any further.

We got to the hospital, and the detective helped me out of the car. Amy was the first person I saw. She was returning to June’s room from the restroom.

“Madison! Thank God!” She raced toward me and hugged me tight. “Hudson will be so delighted to see you.”

I managed to force a smile. “How’s June? Is she okay?”

“She’s fine, love. We just wanted to run some tests, just to be sure.”

I heaved a sigh of relief. I had imagined the worst scenarios.

“Come, let me take you to her ward,” Amy said.

Hudson was there, seated beside her while June slept. He had turned around at the sound of our footsteps approaching.

“Madison!” He tried to contain his excitement so as not to wake June up. “I’m so happy to see you.”

“I’m glad to be back, too. I was so worried about you both.”

He hugged me really tight, and I reciprocated likewise, not wanting to pull away anytime soon. I had missed his fragrance and the warmth of his body.

“Did he hurt you?” he asked.

“No, no, he didn’t. I’m fine, I promise. I’m just really tired.”

“Here, sit. June will be discharged soon. Then we can all return home together.” The seat was right next to June’s bed. I drew closer and placed my hand on her hair, smoothening it and pushing strands of it away from her face.

“Here, your money,” the detective said to Hudson, handing him the briefcase. “Feel free to cross-check its contents to make sure it’s not been tampered with.”

Hudson took the briefcase from him and shook him excitedly. “You truly kept your promise. I’ll be more than willing to reward you for all of the hard work.”

“We were only doing our job, but thank you for the consideration.”

“So what now? What’s going to happen to those guys?”

“They’ll be duly charged to court and serve time for their crimes.”

“Please, whatever happens, I don’t want them coming anywhere close to me or my family ever again.”

“That won’t be the case anymore, I assure you.”

Hudson walked the detective out and returned shortly with June’s discharge papers.

“It’s been a really long night. Let’s go home.” He reached out and pulled me up from the chair, his face covered in smiles.

He lifted June from the hospital bed, and together, we walked back to the car. We dropped Amy off at her house before heading home.

I went straight into the room and collapsed on the bed. Hudson came into the room after he had put June to bed.

He ran a shower for the both of us and helped me to the tub. He bathed himself while I watched, then bathed me next. I just sat there as the water trickled down my skin. The events of the night still filled my memory.
