“Take a different route.”

The driver suddenly swerved to the right and rode at an insane speed. The police cars increased their pace as well, trying to overtake Dylan’s car. The second one of Dylan’s men pulled out his gun and, through the window, tried to deflate the tires of the police vans. As he shot, the police vans swerved in a zigzag motion in an attempt to dodge the bullets.

“I would rather shoot you dead than have him take you away from me again.” Dylan pulled out a gun and pointed it at my forehead. I shrieked in fright.

The police were firing back now, their bullets targeted at the car wheels to deflate them. Dylan took his gun away from my forehead and shot at the police vans, too, through his side of the window. The police had their siren lights on now, blinding their view as they tried to take aim.

“This is the police! Pull over now and surrender peacefully!”

“Fuck you!” Dylan replied and took another shot at them.

Two of the tires had gotten hit by the police. The guy on the wheel could barely control the car’s movement anymore. Our car hit a pole and came to a halt. The impact slammed my head against the door frames. Dylan hastily got out of the car, his hand still clutching his gun.

“Get out!” he barked at me as he went around the truck to pull me out of it.

He opened the car door on my end and dragged me out. He placed his arm across my neck and drew me to his body, knowing that the police wouldn’t shoot as long as he used me as a shield.

“Back off! Don’t come any closer, or I’ll blow her brains out!” Dylan shouted.

“Put the weapon down! You’re surrounded and outnumbered.” The police urged, advancing closer.

“Don’t come any closer! I’m warning you. I’ll blow her brains out, and I’m not bluffing!”

I was scared to my bones. It was the very first time a gun had been pointed at my forehead, twice. My feet could barely carry me. I was trembling all over. Giant beads of sweat trickled seamlessly through my skin. “Please, Dylan, let me go.”

“I did not go through all this trouble to lose to anyone. Not a chance! You’re coming home with me, dead or alive,” he retorted, his eyes still on the policemen as he began to move back slowly, trying to make his way out.

Meanwhile, the two other men with him had surrendered willingly, their hands thrown high up in the air for fear of being massacred.

This is your last warning. Stand down and let the lady go!

Chapter 19

Madison

Dylan was adamant and kept moving backward, turning swiftly at intervals to ascertain that he wasn’t headed toward an obstacle. There was a car right behind him. He kicked through the window with one foot, and the glass shattered.

He reached into the car and opened it from inside. He needed his two hands to be able to start the car without the keys.

“Stand right in front of me and don’t move. If you as much as try to move a muscle, I’ll put a bullet through your head. Got it?” he said.

I nodded vehemently.

He pulled out the wires underneath the driver’s sitting area and tried to force-start the vehicle. My eyes caught the detective, and he signaled me to move out of the way.

I shook my head, too scared to take the risk. He whispered the words, “Trust me,” and urged me to move. I slowly turned my face to look at him. He was still struggling with the wires. I summoned the courage and ran out of the way.

I didn’t stop running until I heard a gunshot. The shot trapped my feet to the ground. I couldn’t move any further.

I began to turn around slowly. Dylan, lying in a pool of his own blood, crawled toward where his gun lay. The officers fired another gunshot right before my eyes. I felt my heartbeat intensify greatly, feeling like I was nearing the finish line in a race. Dylan was motionless now. He had breathed his last.

I placed my hand over my mouth in terror and closed my eyes as tears rolled down them. The sight of his blood leaking out on the floor where he lay gave me the chills. I wished he had turned himself in and not fought the arrest. His dead body wasn’t a sight I wanted to see.

The detective came around to the spot where I was standing and placed his right arm over my shoulder. “It’s over now. Let’s get you back home.”

He held the briefcase containing the money on his left. I walked with him back to one of the police vans and got in, my body thoroughly shaken up. He helped me into the car and threw the briefcase into the back seat.

“Secure the area and send for an ambulance,” the detective ordered before driving me out of the scene with one of the vans.
