“Reaching out?” I shook my head again. This time around, I decided to use Hudson’s body to explain without his express permission. I got up from the floor, picked up his foot, and acted like I was doing something on it to relieve his pain. He just stared at me and swallowed nervously.

I whispered to him that he was supposed to act as if he was in pain. He looked at June, then reluctantly began to act like the leg hurt badly while I attended to it.

“Care?” I gave June a signal that she was close. I put my shoulder under Hudson’s arm and tried to lift him up from the couch while he still made the pain expressions on his face.

“Aid? Assistance?” I signaled again that she was close to the answer.

“It’s ‘help,’ baby. The answer is ‘help,’” Hudson blurted randomly, making haste to disengage himself from me.

“I was going to say that!”

“Oh, come on, baby, the word has a lot of synonyms. It’s difficult to pinpoint which it is exactly.”

I was next. My word was “education.” June made great attempts with the description, but Hudson barely even tried. I got the word correct eventually, and Hudson was up next. He tried to avoid fixing his gaze on me as much as possible, carefully alternating his eyes between his daughter and myself, with his attention mostly focused on June. He also guessed his word correctly. Now, it was June’s turn again.

The word on her forehead was “love.” I began by depicting the idea of a mother rocking her baby close to her bosom and kissing his forehead.

“Mother?” June guessed.

I shook my head and tried another description—I blew a kiss at her.

“A kiss? Family?” June guessed again.

I shook my head once more. Then I pointed at an object and placed my hand on my heart, wearing an endearing look.

“Dear? Affection?” June guessed.

I signaled that she was close. Then, caught up in the spirit of the game, I instinctively went for the next action that came to mind.

Hudson had sat down again and pretty much left the gestures to me. I sat right next to him, crossed my hand over his, and placed my head on his chest, making a blushing face as I did so. Hudson’s heart had begun to beat so rapidly, like the tires of a car at full speed.

“Love?”

“Yes!”

As soon as June guessed it right and I had confirmed it, Hudson disengaged from me and got up from where he sat.

“I feel a bit dizzy, darling. I’ll be going up to my room now. You should get some rest soon. It’s nearly time for your siesta,” he said.

“All right, Dad.”

He planted a kiss on June’s forehead and raced off to his room. I wondered what had caused such an effect on him. Was it the way I had placed my head on his chest? I didn’t dwell on it too much. I was just lost in the moment. I had just now realized that I could have simply carved a heart in the air with my fingers; that could have sufficed.

Chapter 3

Madison

“How was school today?” was all I needed to ask. Little June had lots of tales to tell that got me laughing. We were still talking even after she had bathed.

“So, did you get the answer in the end?”

“Yeah, I did. My teacher gave me a candy bar.”

“Aw, you’re so smart, aren’t you?”

“I know I am, just like Mommy!”

“What?”
