That’s exactly what Agnes was afraid of. That’s why she needed to be careful of how far she let this go. Maybe it would be better if they stayed away from each other, but she couldn’t bring herself to give up Cora’s friendship.

“I know you’re scared, but I’m not asking you to let go of Jackie. I’m not trying to replace her, Agnes. I know that you’ll always love her—as you should. Just don’t close your heart to loving someone else as well. I didn’t know Jackie, but if she loved you as much as you love her, I’m sure she wouldn’t want you to be alone forever.”

“I know she wouldn’t,” Agnes admitted. “I just… I feel like dating anyone else would be letting her go by another degree, and I don’t know if I can handle that.”

“You wouldn’t be letting her go—you’d be letting go of the pain you’re holding onto. You don’t need to be in pain forever to prove how much you love her, Agnes. No one is questioning that.”

Was Cora right? When she put it that way, Agnes’ self-imposed loneliness seemed pointless.

“I see your point, and it’s not that I don’t want what you’re offering… I just don’t know…”

“So we go slow. If you find it’s not working for you, we back off. We’ve gone back to being friends before, and we can do it again if necessary.”

She made it all sound so easy… and really, who was Agnes to say? Maybe it was as simple as Cora said it was. If it didn’t work, then she’d be in the same position she was in now—friends with Cora.

If it did work, though… well, right now, Agnes didn’t want anything more than she wanted to be with Cora. She could be gaining everything. Once before, she’d fallen in love with her soulmate. Was it possible for that to happen again? Could one person have two soulmates?

She thought that she would like to find out.

“Okay.”

Cora’s face lit up. “Really?”

“Yeah. We can try. I’m not promising it’ll work, though.”

“I’m not asking you to. All I want is for us to try.”

“I can do that. It’ll have to be in secret, though. It’ll look very bad for both of us if people find out we’re dating. I’m your boss, after all. I could take advantage of you.”

Cora winked. “You’re welcome to take advantage of me any day of the week. Besides, don’t most of the staff at the hospital think we’re dating anyway?”

“Yes, but all they have is speculation. If someone on the review board catches wind of it, they’re not going to give rumors much credit. If we’re an official couple, though, that’s another story.”

“I suppose that makes sense. It won’t always have to be this way, though, will it?”

“You’re thinking much further ahead than I am. Let’s just go on our first date and see how it goes, okay?”

“Sure. How about tomorrow night, for our first date?”

“Eager, are you?”

Cora rolled her eyes. “Please, like you’re not. You want this as much as I do.”

“I do,” Agnes agreed.

“You know, if this does work out, you’re going to have one hell of anI told you socoming in about ten years.”

Agnes truly hoped that they could get to that point. She was scared about how she was going to react to what was coming, but more than that, she was excited, and hopeful, for the first time in a long time.

“So, what do you want to do?”

“How about dinner and a movie?”

Agnes raised her eyebrows. “What, no death-defying stunts this time?”

“We said we’d take things slow, remember? Let’s have a normal first date. We can pretend no one sees us holding hands in the movie theater and give each other gooey eyes over our dinner plates. We’ll save the skydiving for our second date.”

“That had better be a joke.”
