“You’ll just have to stick around and find out, won’t you?”

“I guess I will.”

Agnes was well on the verge of talking herself into a panic attack when Cora rang the doorbell. After spending an hour picking her outfit and a further half hour doing her hair, Agnes was confident that she looked as good as she could.

She wasn’t satisfied. Cora was young, beautiful and undamaged, and she could do so much better than Agnes. Agnes was already dreading the prospect of Cora realizing it and they hadn’t even started dating properly yet.

Cora did a double take when she saw Agnes. “Wow. You look stunning. The people selling the movie tickets are going to be green with jealousy.”

Agnes glanced self-consciously down at the knee-length, emerald-green dress she wore. It was perhaps a bit fancy for the movies, but she had wanted to look her best for Cora, knowing that Cora was a real showstopper even in casual wear.

And Cora didn’t disappoint. She was dressed more causally than Agnes, in jeans and a bright red blouse with buttons. She had the top three buttons undone, revealing a tantalizing hint of cleavage.

“I feel overdressed,” Agnes admitted.

Cora laughed. “I was just about to say that I feel underdressed. I suppose we’ll simply have to even each other out, won’t we?”

“I guess so. Shall we go, then?”

“First…” Cora produced a bunch of roses from behind her back. Agnes had been too busy ogling at Cora’s cleavage to notice that her hand was behind her back.

Agnes felt herself blushing. When was the last time someone had given her flowers?

“Thank you, they’re beautiful. Let me just go put them in some water.”

Agnes hurriedly pulled out a vase, filled it with water and put the roses inside, taking a moment to admire them.

Cora was still waiting by the door when she came back. She held out her hand, which Agnes took without hesitation.

Cora’s hand was warm and soft in hers. It was a good feeling, the simple connection of hand holding.

They had to release hands when they got to Cora’s car, but Agnes knew it wouldn’t be for long. She intended to hold Cora’s hand throughout the entire movie. She was already more interested in that prospect than whatever they were going to watch.

They exchanged little titbits of news from work as Cora drove them to the nearest mall. Once inside, Cora took Agnes’ hand again.

Agnes glanced around, sure that their joined hands were as obvious as a huge flashing beacon, but no one seemed to notice. At work, that would be a different story. They would need to be careful, but for now, they were free to be themselves.

Agnes expected to feel uneasy at best or, at worst, get thrown into another flashback, but that didn’t happen. All she felt was excitement about their date.

“So, what do you want to watch?”

Agnes shrugged. “I don’t mind.” She was fairly certain that she would spend most of the movie focused on how close Cora was to her in the dark. It would be a waste for her to choose. “You can pick.”

“Hm.” Cora glanced up at the various posters. “How about that one?”

Agnes didn’t keep up with movie trailers, but a look at the poster seemed to indicate a cheesy romance. Excellent—it seemed she and Cora had similar bad taste.

“That looks perfect.”

Agnes insisted on paying for the tickets. “You drove us here and you’ll be taking me back. The least I can do is get us the tickets.”

“Fine, but I’m buying dinner, then.”

Agnes wasn’t thinking about dinner right now. They got popcorn and Coke and took their seats. Agnes immediately took Cora’s hand, balancing her popcorn on the one knee with the other hand.

She realized that she didn’t even remember the last time she’d been to a movie.

As it started, Cora began rubbing circles over the back of Agnes’ hand with her thumb. It was extremely pleasant. Agnes leaned her head back against the seat and smiled as she tried to pay attention to the movie.
