“Yes, we do. We’ve taken a step along the process of becoming parents. I’d say that merits some pizzas and soda.”

“You don’t have to give up wine, too, Agnes. I’m the only one who’s going to be pregnant.”

“I told you, I’m doing it in solidarity. Once the baby is born and you’re properly recovered, we’ll share a glass of wine together to celebrate.”

“I think we’ll be too sleep-deprived to make time for celebrations, at least at first.”

“All the more reason to do so now.”

Cora grinned. “Alright. Sodas and pizzas it is.”

They picked up the pizzas and soda on the way home. It was a Wednesday, but they had both taken the day off work for this.

“Here, hold this.”

Agnes handed Cora the pizza boxes to carry along with the bottle of soda she was already holding. Cora didn’t know what she was up to but took the boxes willingly enough.

Before she knew what was happening, Agnes literally swept her off her feet.

“What is this?” Cora’s indignant tone was somewhat ruined by the way she was breathless with laughter.

“I told you; I’m going to takeverygood care of you while you’re carrying our child.”

“We don’t even know if I’m pregnant yet!”

“Too bad.” Agnes leaned down and kissed her. Cora had to admit, she liked this angle, mashed up against her wife’s breasts and staring up into her beautiful face.

She was still staring as Agnes carried her through the door, setting her lightly on her feet, just as she had done on their wedding day, nearly eight months ago now.

Cora knew she was bigger than Agnes and was impressed again that Agnes had managed to lift her.

“Soon you won’t be able to do that anymore,” Cora muttered.

“Only for nine months. Or maybe I’ll just get stronger as you get bigger. It’ll be like weightlifting, except you’ll be my personal training weight.”

I’ll have to modify my gym routine,” Cora sighed. “It’s a pity but I do enjoy being lazy! Athlete life never was for me.”

Agnes turned to face her. “Are you sure about this? We can still go the adoption route if you’d prefer. I know that pregnancy is no joke.”

“No, I want this! It’s just going to be a big change, that’s all.”

“It’ll be worth it. Now come on, these pizzas are getting cold.”

Agnes lay down on the couch and beckoned for Cora to join her, spreading her legs so that Cora could sit between them. Cora eagerly did so, letting herself relax as Agnes handed her a slice of pizza.

For a while, they munched in silence, each immersed in their own thoughts.

Cora’s mind wandered back to the rocky start to their relationship. “I never really gave up on you, you know,” she said quietly. “Even in the beginning, when things were really bad… I always held onto hope. You proved that hope true.”

“I hope our child has a heart of hope, just like you do. The day you took me back was one of the happiest days of my life. Thank you, for never giving up on me.”

“And thank you for being brave enough to open your heart again. Jackie would have been proud.”

“Yeah, I know. I like to think she’s happy now, wherever she is—and at peace—now that my heart has healed over in gold.”

“I was thinking… if you’re okay with it… for baby names, how about Jackie for a girl? And Jack for a boy?”

The pizza went flying as Agnes spun Cora around, kissing her fiercely. “Really?”
