“You, of all people, should know that,” I comment, triggering him to come to a stop unexpectedly. Despite my best efforts, I still crash into his back.

Zander snickers while Ares sighs.

“Dom, can we not?” Ares sounds really uneasy.I don’t like it.“We’re not in the right space.”

“And I fucking care because?” Domino hisses as he looks over his shoulder to glare at Ares. “Our Maiden is showing acts of cockiness, and you want to entertain it.”

“There’s a big difference between cocky and confidence,” I mutter while my eyes drift off to my right, noticing a bit of movement from a group of jocks looking our way.

I notice how they’re pointing at Zander in particular—their laughter and taunting smirks make me frown.

“If you’re going to talk back to me, Iva, you’re at least going to look me in the eye while doing so,” Domino growls, but I’m still distracted.

For good reason.

“Zander,” I voice his name rather sternly, prompting his attention.

“Hmm, Dolcezza?”

“My shoelace is untied,” I announce while I tilt my head just slightly, noticing a glimmer from the distance that makes my finger tingle with a sense of urgency.

“Can you tie them for me, please?” I offer and dare to move my eyes away so I can meet his confused gaze.

It’s only a look, but he suddenly smiles and leans in until he’s towering over me.

“And if I do?” he whispers.

“I’ll sleep in your bed tonight,” I say, trying not to sound as urgent as I am for him to duck.

“Deal,” he gleefully says and drops to one knee in time for a loud ‘‘pew’ sound to go off.

Multiple people flinch or scream at the sound, but my body is forced to press against Domino, thanks to Ares pushing me into Dom’s chest. His bulky arms are around me in a second, while Ares is no longer standing where I was next to a kneeling Zander.

The three of them are looking in the direction of what I can assume is a fake bullet, and there is the culprit in question.

A woman and her posse of men.

“Fucking cunt ass bitch,” Ares growls menacingly. It’s the first time I’ve heard him sound as angry as Domino.

Only it sounds more sinister. As if he’s ready to not only kill but hide all the bodies before the bell rings.

“My bad,” the girl sweetly calls out and even giggles. “I pressed the wrong button.”

I’m waiting for Domino to say something or even stomp over there and confront them as the men laugh hysterically at the woman’s fake form of apology, but his silence forces me to look up at him.

His expression is unreadable, which makes me arch an eyebrow his way. There’s something in his eyes I don’t recognize because I’ve never seen the emotion twinkle in his hazelnut honey eyes.

I don’t like that.

“And why aren’t you doing anything?” The words leave my mouth before I can stop them.

Domino blinks once. Twice. Three times before he lowers his gaze to me.

“What?” he questions.

“They almost hit Zander,” I emphasize. “You’re not going to do something about it?”

His deep frown is expected, but his silence only ticks me off.
