“I appreciate the compliment.” I quietly giggle. “They’re not bad. I mean, I feel as though they never meant to be in the predicaments they are. At least, I’m sure Zander wasn’t. As for Ares and Domino, I guess these were roles they took for their benefit.”

“Ares is loyal to Domino,” Kian admits as he looks deep in thought. “But if you want my honest opinion, I don’t think he will be much longer.”

Huh?

“Why would you say that?”

“He seems intrigued by you. Or should I say, attracted to your end game?”

“My end game?” I quietly repeat in wonder.

“No other woman would last this long without an end game. A strong enough purpose that taking this deal is but a less inconvenience in comparison,” he reveals. “You think Scarlett lasted dating Domino?”

“I mean, he stalks her like she’s the best and worst thing that happened to him,” I say in dismay, adding an eye roll that makes Kian smirk widely.

“You look jealous,” Kian hums.

“I’m not!”

“You don’t need to be,” he assures me. “Scarlett put him in that predicament. He’s only finishing business, or I’m pretty positive he’d never go near that cheating cunt.”

Cheating?

“She cheated on him?”

“She never loved Domino, to begin with,” Kian sternly notes. “It was obvious. She only went along with it for the sake of being close to Zander. Doubt you know this, but Benedicts and Barbieri used to have a good, solid relationship. To the point, it was predicted Zander and Scarlett would have been placed in an arranged marriage.”

Shit, that’s how close their families were.

“So, that went downhill after… you know.”

Kian simply nods.

“But Scarlett is still gripping on the possibility that they can be something?” I offer.

“Gripping very desperately.” Kian rolls his eyes. “Imagine as a child, you’re told this individual is your prince, and you’re destined to marry him. Then something bad happens that involves your family. Instead of being truthful and breaking the kids’ hearts with reality, they laid a Band-Aid, one after another, hoping time and growth would make a miracle that would benefit both family heritages.”

“But that never happened,” I conclude, envisioning everything in my mind. “Why would they assume with age, Zander would just be fine with marrying a woman whose family probably abandoned him or were cunning when he needed support?”

“That’s what they can’t seem to wrap their heads around,” he replies with a shake of his head. “It’s so simple to understand, but realistically, they don’t want to understand. They don’t wish to acknowledge the harm their abandoned seclusion and neglect harvested.”

Or rather pretend the problem doesn’t exist rather than confront it.

“Is that why Scarlett has a crush on Zander?” I just want confirmation.

“When you’ve been envisioning your wedding since you were three, you’re going to be in love with that person until they reject you,” Kian sums up.

“But he’s made it rather obvious he’s not interested. Besides, she almost shot him on the first day of class, saying it was an accident. Called him ruthless names and belittled him in front of his peers.” Just saying it makes my blood boil. “She’s a cunt who can’t even express her true emotions for the one she’s apparently been crushing on since she was a child. Her communication skills are lacking, and I’m sure she can’t handle rejection.” I hate the idea of wasting oxygen on her.

“Sooner or later, she’ll have to give up,” I conclude. “She’ll have no choice but to see that Zander is taken.”

“She could give the excuse she can’t see with one eye,” Kian mocks with a smirk.

“One eye?” I’m confused. “What do you mean by that analogy?”

“It’s not an analogy,” he notes while he keeps up a confused gaze with a stern one. “You didn’t hear about what happened at the club the other day? You were there at the party.”

“Um… no? No one has brought it up aside from the urgent need for me to have this tracker in my flesh,” I emphasize. “Why? What happened?”
