“Why would he expect to be betrayed?” I whisper, but I feel I already know the answer. From Kian’s expression, he knows I have the answer to my question.

“We all prepare for the storm, even if there’s not a cloud in the sky.”

The real truth of this life.

“But you’d never betray Zander.”

“Huh?” I look at him. “Why would you say that?”

“I see it in your eyes,” Kian confesses. “There’s something between you two brewing. Honestly, I saw it click from the videotape during your first confrontation. One solid look when you caught his blade.” He leans back in his chair and looks at the ceiling. “That man really did fall in love with you.”

“So, I’m doomed,” I conclude, leaving him laughing hysterically.

“Totally doomed!” he agrees. “You approve, though.”

“Hmmm, I’m not sure.”

“Your mind may not be sure, but your body is very responsive to him compared to Ares and Domino. You have warmed up to Ares, I’ll say.”

“How do you know?”

“I have to watch the security cameras at the school from time to time. Your Ruthless Kings have been rather antsy lately.”

“Antsy over what? Their grades?” I huff. “They don’t even care about that.”

“They actually care about your safety, in particular,” Kian reveals. “I know they look like young, pathetic idiots with money, power, and horny dicks, but those three have their own set of enemies. Especially Domino.”

“Especially, huh?” I roll my eyes. “Don’t be surprised by the bullying jerk.”

“He bullied you when you guys were younger?” I can tell he’s asking more for confirmation than being genuinely curious. “Domino mentioned it, saying that’s why you hate him.”

“Of course. Acting like the victim.” I hum. “He bullied me with his entourage of douchebags. Though there was only one dude who REALLY hated me. Honestly, I think he hated me more than Domino, but he didn’t have the same power as Domino, so he couldn’t go to the full extent I’m sure he wished.”

“Lovely,” Kian grunts. “Who was he?”

“I kind of don’t remember.” I cringe, admitting that. “Crazy, right? I remember Domino because I forced myself to ingrain the pain he contributed into my mind. Our families… have a history, so I told myself I had to hold on to that agony. Hold on to the laughter, the torment… commemorate the scars and burns… so that when I reached the point in life where I could lift my head with pride and confront him, I could finally allow all that pent-up emotion to be free.”

It sounds stupid saying it out loud, but it’s the truth.

“Anyone else who contributed to the assault and abuse I dealt with Domino being the leader of the bully pack seemed insignificant otherwise.”

“Wow.” Kian crosses one leg over the other while he admires me. “That man either had the biggest crush on you but wasn’t allowed to fuck you, or he truly hated your power.”

“Power?” I laugh. “What’s powerful about being bullied every day at school to the point of almost becoming disabled?”

He frowns at that last part but gives me the answer my curiosity is craving.

“You never ran away, Gemini.”

I blink back at him, staring in confusion.

“I mean… I kind of did. I ended up being homeschooled.”

“Yet that was a last resort and probably out of your parents’ or guardians’ approval. Truthfully, if your parents said no, you would have returned to school, yes?”

“Well…”Yes. I would have sucked up my broken pride and gone back.“Yeah.”

“You don’t need to tell me the deets.” He puts his hands behind his head and smiles. “Anyone who can survive two months among these fuckers is a strong-ass bitch.”
