“What?!” Niccolo shouted.
“Lars has trained our foot soldiers well. We’ll take every precaution in his absence,” Dario said. “Short of a missile strike, nobody can reach me in the safe room – and if it’s a missile strike, not even Lars can save us from that.”
“This is insane!” Niccolo snarled. “With Massimo gone, the rest of us should be closing ranks – not going off on wild goose chases!”
Niccolo was right.
But Dario knew that I had an agonizing pain burning deep within me. I wouldn’t be any good to him until I had taken care of it for good.
“Your objection is duly noted, consigliere,” Dario said, then looked at me. “Do what you must… but do it as quickly as possible.”
“Thank you,” I said gratefully.
Then I left the room to make my first call.

Iimmediately phoned Gunnar.
“Hey, man,” he answered cheerfully. “Sorry, I don’t have word on the other Wagner dudes in the pictures yet – ”
“I’m not calling about that.”
He could tell from my tone of voice that something was seriously wrong.
“What’s going on, brother?”
“I think Rachel just took a shot at my employer.”
There was a pause.
“What, you mean like a nasty Facebook post, or – ”
“No. I mean she fired two bullets at us half an hour ago.”
“WHAT?!”
I gave him a quick rundown of what had happened.
“Are you SURE it was her?!” Gunnar asked in astonishment.
“No, but that’s why I need your help.”
“Dude, if I couldn’t find her before, I don’t think I’m gonna be able to find her NOW.”
“You won’t be looking for Rachel Bauer. Not by name, anyway. You’ll be looking for a female assassin for hire.”
Another pause.
“Um, bro, I’m not exactly sure I – ”
“She won’t be advertising openly. She’d have put the word out through her old intelligence contacts… which means your intelligence contacts might have heard about her.”
Gunnar sighed. “What happens if I DO find out something about her? Am I supposed to text her, ‘Hey, Lars wants to know why you shot at him’?”
“No. I want you to hire her.”
“…WHAT?!”
