“Tell her you want a meeting – that it’s a matter of the utmost delicacy.”
“Dude – ”
“Offer her 10,000 euros just for the meeting.”
“DUDE – ”
“I’ll handle the payment,” I said.
“But she’ll know who I am as soon as I show up!”
“You won’t be there for the meeting,” I said grimly. “I will.”
“Oh,” Gunnar said, finally realizing what I was planning. “Why don’t you just go to her house in London? I found it for you last time – ”
“I want to catch her unawares. And seeing as she botched the job on my boss, I don’t think she’ll be staying there. She’s probably laying low someplace else.”
“Oh…”
I knew he didn’t like being caught up in this, so I tried to reassure him. “I really appreciate this, Gunnar. It’s important.”
“Just promise me one thing.”
“What?”
“You’re just going to talk to her – right?”
“Of course. All we’re going to do is talk.”
At least, that’s what I hoped.

Alot happened over the next 48 hours – although none of it was related to Gunnar’s search for Rachel.
Massimo called. He and the Widow’s granddaughter were safe. Interestingly, Aurelio had contacted Massimo directly and tried to get him to hand over the girl.
The news seemed to confirm that Fausto was behind both Venice and the assassination attempt on Dario… but Massimo seemed to think Aurelio had gone rogue and that Fausto might not be involved at all.
Then our consigliere dropped another huge bombshell.
A few hours after Massimo called with an update, Niccolo announced he and Roberto were leaving for Hong Kong.
“What?” I asked, stunned. “Why?”
“That doesn’t concern you,” Niccolo said curtly.
“What was that you said earlier?” I snapped. “Something about closing ranks and going on goose chases?”
“Well, if you can do whatever the hell you want, why not me and Roberto?” Niccolo said with a saccharine smile.
I tried appealing to the boss. “Dario – ”
“It’s for the best,” he reassured me. “I’ve already discussed it with them and approved the trip.”
“What about not trusting private jets or airline companies?”
“We’ve made arrangements,” Roberto said. “It will be fine.”
