I glanced down –

And saw he was looking at the diamond ring on my finger.

Suddenly self-conscious and guilty – like he’d caught me cheating on him, as stupid and ridiculous as that was – I pulled my hand away and covered the ring with my right palm.

“What do you want?!” I asked. My tone was harsher than I meant it to be –

No it wasn’t.

He’d left me.

He’d abandoned me.

He didn’t get to show up now and pass judgment on me just because I’d moved on with my life!

“I… you’re engaged?” he asked, stunned.

I remembered Alistair’s whiny orders:

You can’t tell him I’m here! Or that I’m your fiancé!

“Not that it’s any business of yours,” I snapped, “but yes.”

“Do I know hi– ”

“Where have you BEEN?!” I cried out.

“I was in prison. In Milan.”

Prison?!

In Milan?!

My mind was reeling.

Was he not mixed up with the Chinese?!

Had all of that been a mistake?!

“I tried to find you,” he continued. “I had Gunnar looking for you for the last three and a half years, but your phone number had changed. So had your email, and I didn’t know your address.”

Gunnar?!

But Alistair looked for Gunnar and couldn’t find him!

More than that, though… Lars had tried.

He’d tried to reach me…

And he hadn’t been able to.

He hadn’t walked out on me.

He hadn’t abandoned me.

Emotions slammed into me like a tidal wave, and I was powerless to stop them.

My vision blurred as a tear rolled down my cheek.
