Lars saw it, and the concern in his eyes –

The love I still saw there –

It was too much for me.

I felt like I was dying.

“Rachel – ” he said as he moved towards me –

“STOP!” I cried out as I stepped out of his reach.

My world was coming apart.

It felt like everything I ‘knew’ was crumbling beneath my feet.

If he touched me –

If I felt his skin on mine –

If he transported me back to the day before he disappeared, before he destroyed my heart –

I didn’t know what I would do.

Fall into his arms?

Forget everything else?

Just so I could feel his lips on mine again?

No.

NO.

I’d suffered too goddamn much to just let him waltz back into my life like this –

“If Gunnar couldn’t find me, then how did you find this house?” I snapped, trying to keep control over my emotions.

“I made a friend in prison. He has… connections on the outside. I told him about your mother and how she met your father, so my friend sent people to Pescara to ask around. They found some women who remembered your mother. Once we had her name, Gunnar was finally able to find you.”

Pescara…

My mother’s name…

It was like jumbled clues from a mystery that made no sense.

It made me angry.

“It took you three and a half years to do that?”

Lars looked like he felt horribly guilty. “That was my fault. I didn’t trust my friend at first. But I found you – that’s the important thing.”

Found me…

After you spent three and a half years in –

“You said you were in prison,” I said, slowly putting the pieces together. “Did they arrest you when you went on that mission?”

“Yes.”
