“As soon as humanly possible.”

“Hold on.” I looked at an app on my phone. “There’s a flight out of Heathrow at 9 PM, but I’ll have to catch a connecting flight to Florence. If I get a taxi, I might be able to get to you by 2 in the morning.”

“I’ll have Giorgio waiting for you with a car. Just text me the arrival time of the flight.”

“Okay.”

“Good. Sorry to rush you, but we need you back here with us BADLY.”

“I understand.”

“I’m glad you’re alright. It’s good to hear from you – we were afraid something had happened.”

“Thanks. And don’t worry about Massimo – he’s going to come through. I know it.”

“Let’s hope so. I’ll see you soon.”

Then he hung up.

I walked out of the shop and rejoined Rachel on the street.

“What was the phone call?” she asked.

“I need to go back to Florence. And I want you to go with me.”

I saw the panic in her eyes as she realized what I was talking about.

“Are you insane?! I can’t do that!”

“It’s going to be fine,” I said as I took her hands.

“Lars, they’ll KILL me – ”

“No they won’t.” I paused. “Niccolo probably would… but not Dario. And Dario’s the boss.”

“How do you know he won’t shoot me himself?!”

“Because of something he told me years ago.”

I remembered his words in the cell in San Vittore: If this girl IS the One… once you get out of here, you go after her. Go find her. Let nothing stand in your way. You go to her and lay your heart on the line, and you do everything in your power to get her back… and if she is the One, she’ll say yes. If she is the One, she won’t have been able to move on without you. The day you come back to her is the day she can finally breathe again. You two will start your life over together, and it will be like nothing ever changed.

There had been some bumps along the way, but what he’d said was true.

And I knew he had believed it fervently when he’d said it.

I guess we’ll find out if he still does, I thought.

“You’re going to risk my fucking life on something a mafia don said years ago?!” Rachel exclaimed, her voice on the edge of hysteria.

“He owes me,” I said soothingly, “and I’m going to call in every single favor he owes. It’ll be okay.”

She shook her head frantically. “You’re asking me to go and get murdered – ”

“I’m asking you to trust me.”

“Let’s go somewhere else and start all over – ”

“I can’t,” I said regretfully.
