“We’ve got six hours before we have to catch our flight,” she said as she pressed the ‘Close Door’ button.

“Well, let’s make good use of them,” I murmured as we began to kiss.

The sex was fantastic. Two weeks locked away in a cell had given me an almost insatiable appetite, and Rachel and I put it to good use.

After our second time around, we were lying in each other’s arms when she hesitantly asked, “This Rosolini guy – can you trust him?”

“Dario,” I said quietly. “And yes – with my life.”

“He’s mafia, though.”

“Cosa Nostra, yes. But he’s different. So are his brothers.”

“Lars – ”

“I know, I know. I thought exactly the same way as you for the longest time. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t take him up on his offer to find you earlier.”

She sat up on her elbow and looked at me in alarm. “Wait – Dario’s the one who found me?!”

“The family sent some men to Pescara, and they asked around until they found out your mother’s maiden name.”

“‘Asked around’?” she repeated in alarm.

“In a friendly way,” I said in amusement. “Once they found out, Gunnar tracked you down. Your mother’s name was on the shell company that owns your house.”

Rachel stared at me. “I don’t know whether to be frightened or impressed.”

“If it was anybody else, I’d say you were smart to be frightened. But with Dario and Niccolo, just be impressed.”

“How’s Gunnar?”

“He’s great.”

“I asked Alistair to try to find him – I figured he could tell me what happened to you – but Alistair said there wasn’t any trace of him.”

“Yeah, well, Alistair lied about a lot of shit. He must have lied about that, too.”

“Yeah…” Rachel said, lying back down against my body. “Tell me again, though: why’s this Dario guy any different from all the other organized crime bosses out there?”

“For one, he completely banned all human trafficking in his territory. He didn’t want anyone bringing in women from other countries and exploiting them.”

“Why, so he could use his stable of local girls?” she asked bitterly.

“No. He also banned all pimps in the areas he controlled. He told the women they could remain sex workers, but if they quit and went into something else, he’d give them 5000 euros apiece to start a new life.”

I could feel Rachel’s head move against my shoulder as she looked at me in surprise. “…really?”

“Really. And he completely got his family out of the drug business.”

“So what does he do, then?”

“He’s big into political corruption. The family also apparently controls some ports. I’m sure there’s a bunch of other unsavory stuff, but he doesn’t victimize women, and he refuses to have anything to do with drugs.”

“…huh…”

I could almost hear the wheels turning in her head.

“Just meet him,” I said. “You’ll see.”
