“I’ll leave it up to you what you want to say. Just keep in mind that when Delgado wakes up, he’s going to tell them everything you said, while leaving out 90% of what he said.”

She gave me the barest hint of a smile. “If you didn’t hear the conversation, how would you know what he said?”

“I don’t.”

Then I turned and headed for the door.

“Where are you going?” she called out.

“To call the medics. They need to get him to the infirmary.”

“…that’s it?” she asked in disbelief.

“That’s it,” I said without looking back at her.

“You don’t have anything else to say about what just happened?”

I paused and finally turned around.

“Actually, I do.” And in the most sincere and admiring tone I could convey, I said, “Well done.”

Then I walked out of the room.

“Well done,” Lars said, then walked out of the gym.

I stared after him in stunned silence.

He seemed sincere.

Like I’d earned his respect.

Huh…

Maybe he’s not so bad after all.

I looked down at where Delgado lay crumpled on the mat.

Now that my anger had subsided, I could accurately assess what I’d done.

What a lot of men might call ‘post-nut clarity.’

I checked out the crooked angle of his leg and winced.

Shit… I might’ve gone a little overboard.

However, I reminded myself that if Delgado had had his way, I would have ended up on the ground where he was now.

And probably with my pants down around my knees.

Or maybe face-down in the streets of Kabul with a bullet in my back.

I didn’t feel sorry for Delgado at all. If he hadn’t walked into the gym – if he hadn’t stalked me, as Henriksson had put it – he wouldn’t be where he was right now.

But I was intrigued by the other man.
