But this time, she didn’t give him a second chance.

She grabbed the back of his head with both her hands –

And drove her knee into his face.

CRACK!

Blood spattered the mat.

Rachel let go of him and backed away.

Delgado looked dazed, but before he could collapse, she kicked him – hard.

The toe of her boot slammed right under his jaw.

His head snapped back –

And he collapsed to the ground, unconscious.

Holy SHIT.

I holstered my pistol and jogged over.

Rachel was breathing hard, though not as hard as you’d expect after taking down a Special Forces operative.

Delgado’s eyes were closed. Blood streamed out of his broken nose and spread in a puddle across the mat.

“Jesus,” I muttered.

“Do we have a problem, Henriksson?” she asked, eyeing me like I might attack her next.

“Not at all.”

“Then why are you here?”

“I saw him stalking you, so I followed him in. I was worried what he might do. But you indicated you wanted to handle it yourself. After our talk earlier, I figured I should give you the chance.” I raised my eyebrows as I peered down at Delgado’s unconscious form. “You handled it, alright.”

“Yes, I did,” she said defiantly.

“You realize he’ll probably never walk the same after this, even with surgery.”

“Then maybe he shouldn’t have threatened to rape me,” she snarled.

When I didn’t answer immediately, she snapped, “What – are you going to cover for him?”

She said it like I was a would-be rapist, too.

“No,” I replied. “I’ll tell them he threatened you with sexual assault, that he initiated the attack, and you defended yourself. That’s it.”

Rachel frowned. “What about… some of the things I said?”

“What about them?”

“They might come across as… inflammatory,” she said, choosing her words judiciously.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t hear most of your conversation,” I said with a fake smile. It was a lie – and I made sure she knew it.

She raised one eyebrow. “Nothing?”
