She’s in a white summer dress, her hands resting on her belly. Her blonde hair is longer than I’ve ever seen it. It falls in waves down to her elbows.

She looks like a fucking goddess.

Healthy and safe.

When she sees me in the doorway, she starts to get up, but I reach her before she can. I drop to my knees in front of her, my hands on her face. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, Yakov. I’m okay. I told Dr. Jenkins not to worry you.” She strokes her fingers through my hair. “I feel okay. Everything is fine.”

“Holy shit.” Mariya circles her finger at me. “Is this all about the blood pressure?”

I keep my hands on Luna, but turn to face my sister. “It’s about the two gunmen I just fought off on my way inside.”

Her face pales. “He knows.”

“He knows,” I grit out. My hands are shaking with rage. “How the fuck he knows, I have no fucking idea.”

“Pavel?” Luna asks, looking from me to Mariya and back again. “He knows we’re here?”

“It was the paramedics,” Mariya breathes. “This is my fault. I called that ambulance and?—”

I shake my head. “I took care of them. They didn’t talk. I made sure of it.”

I tied up all of the loose ends. I kept a tight lid on this safehouse. So how in the hell does Pavel keep getting the jump on me?

Luna gasps at something over my shoulder and I’m instantly on my feet with my gun aimed at the door.

Dr. Jenkins is standing in the doorway with his hands raised over his head. “I just came down here to check on you.”

I lower the gun. “I’m not the one in danger. I’m fine.”

Luna’s hand slips down my shoulder. She squeezes and I wince. “No, you’re not. You’re shot, Yakov.”

Luna holds her hand out for me to see. There’s blood on her palm.

“It’s a graze.” I shake her off. “I don’t even feel it.”

Dr. Jenkins closes the door behind him. “Because you’re in shock.”

“I’m not in fucking shock. I’ve been shot before.”

“Shock is a physical state as well as a mental one. You’re too amped up on adrenaline to feel anything right now. But if you sit down, I’ll examine you.”

I shake my head. “We need to get out of here. Now. One of the gunmen got away. He’s probably relaying what happened and getting ready to come back with more men.”

“You can’t face them all on your own.” I narrow my eyes and Luna holds up her hands. “You can’t face them all on your own with a bad arm. Give me your phone and I’ll text Isay for backup. While we wait for them to arrive, Dr. Jenkins can look at your arm.”

“I don’t take orders,” I remind her icily. “Especially when your safety is on the line.”

Gently, Luna curves her hand around my jawline. Her blue eyes are wide and pleading. “It’s not an order, Yakov. It’s a request. Please let Dr. Jenkins look you over. I can’t lose you.”

I pull her close, my lips brushing against the shell of her ear as I sigh and relent. “Only for you, solnyshka.”

I give Luna my phone and tell her to text Nik. “I want as many men as the mansion can spare to be sent to the safehouse to escort us out of here.”

Dr. Jenkins rolls up my sleeve and inspects my “gunshot wound.” Like I suspected, it’s nothing more than a graze. Dr. Jenkins cleans it up and slaps a bandage on my arm.

As soon as he’s done, I point to Mariya. “Get packed. Now. We’re leaving immediately.”
